D40 built-in flash, su800,2x sb600

No, it isn't possible as the flash won't fully deploy.

What? I'm pretty sure the SU-800 should be able to trigger SB-600's without worrying about pre-flash from the on-board flash.

The OP appears to be asking if the D40's built-in flash can be used in conjunction with the SU800. It can't. The SU800 will prevent the built-in flash from properly popping up.

If thats the case a sync cable can be use? Just exploring the
possiblties.
A sync cable, like the SC-28, will also block the pop up flash.

You mentioned getting an SU-800. Have you considered the SB-800 flash instead? It will give you nearly the same (if not the same) wireless CLS features as the SU-800, to control your SB-600.

Really what a surprise. Didn't even consider the su-800 not allowing the built in flash to pop up.

More and more the SB-800 is the best choice.

Here is another thought: if you really want to get into CLS wireless flash photography in a serious way, the D80 has almost the same wireless commander capabilities as the SB-800 built into the camera, using the pop up flash.

I recently purchased a SB800 and a SB 26 to synch with my SB600. The SB800,IMOP,was worth my money. I needed to use all 3 flashes to fire simultaneously and thanks to the SB800,it worked flawlessly. It seesm like you already have 2 SB600s and there are about $70 price difference between the SB800 and the SU-800(if you buy the SB800 at ebay and I paid $315) and from what I read about the SU-800 is that it's not as reliable as the SB800.

I would say that extra $70 or so will eventually pay off for your photo shootings.

I used the SB600 as the master flash on my D50 and SB800/SB26 as a slave.
I highly recommend the SB800 if you want to do Nikon CLS.

That setup gives a good, simple master / slave setup.

However, a true TTL CLS setup with a D50 (or D40) would require the SB-800 to be used as the master, and one or more SB-600 or SB-800 as the slave(s). (The SB-26 is not CLS compatible)

For my shooting style,a TTL wouldn't work for me because of the SB26. You'd need to use manual mode in all flashes. I just needed to use 3 flashes wirelessly and to fire at the same time and it worked perfectly. I wouldn't call it CLS.

Since the original poster has 2 SB600s,with the addition of the SB800 he'll be able to do Nkon CLS
