Peter,

Make sure that the long exposure noise subtraction (fixed pattern subtraction, CF1) is turned on. Also, I found that Fred Miranda's ISO-R photoshop actions work very well. I used the IS0800 version for a 1.5-2 second exposure at ISO100.

Here were several of my attempts:

Peter,

Try to shoot at lower ISO rates. Turn on the built in noise reduction of the camera. Also, you may want to try Neat Image to clean up noise in night shots.

Best regards,
Vladimir

Can you provide more information about what kind of shots you're trying to get? Are they long exposures? High ISO? ???

The D30 is capable of excellent night shots as long as you set the proper variables for the different circumstances. I realize this is what you're asking about but it's hard to zero in on your particular problem without a bit more details on what you're shooting and how.

Think RAW Format works the best @higher ISO's ; )

I take nights shots quite a bit with my G1. I'm looking at buying a D30, I'll skip the the 60 for now. Should I be concerned about the abillity of the D30's night shots.
When shooting night shots I mess with the time exp. settings.

Hi Nick,

I was shooting with the Sony S75 before which is very similar in performance and results to the G1. Since I do alot of night photography, I researched for quite some time for a camera that would give me more flexibility in this area than my S75. I eventually settled on the D30 and have not been disappointed yet. The D30's ability to yield very good results up to ISO 800 and acceptable results at ISO 1600 is already a huge step forward from the S75 and G1 IMO. In addition, I'm very happy with the results I'm getting from the D30 on long exposures, something which was not nearly as compelling with the S75. I don't use the esteemed L-glass although am not using the cheapo lenses either. The results with this camera are excellent.

That said, I've also looked at the sample shots from the D60. While I'm not interested in upgrading, I've noticed that it seems the D60 (perhaps due to whatever its new noise processing algorithm is) seems to have the potential to do even better in very long exposures (i.e. > 30 s) but that remains to be seen. Nonetheless, I've done 30 sec exposures at night with the D30 and have been most pleased with the results.

Bottom line, in comparison to what you can do with the G1, you will have far far more flexibility with the D30 in this respect with much better results. I don't think you can go wrong.

I think you should be concerned about finding a D30. They are disappearing unless you are going to buy a used one.

Peter,

As mentioned, some examples (with settings) would help "diagnose" your question. I have been taking quite a few night shots lately with my D30 and noticed I was getting quite a bit of noise as well. After cleaning my lenses I decided to attempt the CMOS. I only used a blower brush (other forum links talk about cleaning the CMOS), but it did seem to help my situation.

actions at work all right. I never cared for the ISO noise reduction actions. I think they make the pictures look wierd. Unnatural.
