first review fz18

It looks like its going to be a nice camera. 400ISO looks very useable to me.

One of the shots is 100ISO and the other is 400ISO with some minor photoshop. And for my needs it looks pretty darn good! The next FZ50 should be pretty nice if they are working on one.

Its unfortunate that an image that size is of almost no use for printing even a 6x4. Being honest...its a great choice for low ISO outdoors..with that monster zoom...

Indoors...well that is another story. I wouldnt even want to go to ISO 400 being honest.

Is it a dslr that you want? For + - 500 bugs, you will have a better low iso, but wait... you will have noise that you woudnt even want to go to ISO 1600...

and then with a lower quality of lens, you will lost the F2.8 -F4.2 witch represents 1-2 stops better than regular lens, ....

are you ready to spend 4000 bugs???
then go on...

I agree for ISO 1600 and up for this kind of photografics tool, but hey this is well
good for a P&S no?

there aren't perfect but wait , what a quality for the 400BUGS!

Well to each their own. Barry's known as something of a.....

er....

well.....

"stickler" when it comes to noise and particularly noise REDUCTION! ;).

Personally I'd be happy to use the ISO 400. Even the 800 would work for some small prints. I'm actually impressed/relieved that these images look like an "improvement" over the previous cam.

Mark.

Leica appears to have succeeded where Oly and others have failed with the quality of the 18x lens. This is an accomplishment.

First 2 shots resized and sharpened, the others had a little NR and sharpening done and ofcourse as the site mentioned, all shots underexposed by 0.33EV...

ISO 100:

ISO 200:

ISO 400:

ISO 800:

ISO 1600:

Sure, these are only small versions, but there is no doubt in my mind that Panasonic is heading into the right direction with processing in this new camera. On top of that, lens is simply stunning, especially in light of what the other ultrazooms perform in this area.

Those pictures look pretty great! My "camera buying policy" was "no more cameras", but it looks like i'm going to change it to "no more cameras until FZ18 comes out" :)

Barry's posts are as interesting as listening to a comic that only
knows one joke.
I see you forgot to read the "forum rules"

Personal remarks are not welcome. Maybe you would like me to throw some your way? I wont stoop that low. I find most of your posts boring too..but hey, that is life..

I have an SLR, film and digital.

Noise is not the issue..NR is...

Heard this one too often, you could print a t shirt with that comment on!

Bugs? Wow didnt know companies took bugs as payment...better get my net out then and jam har ;-)

So is this!!

Forget this cam on jpegs, panasonic jpegs suck, RAW might be ok though..we shall see on that one.

That is how to do high ISO.

I reckon if you worked all day catching bugs..you would maybe get 100 or so...gonna take a while to get 400 odd!

I'm encouraged. Thanks for taking the time and trouble to post these. The FZ18 looks like it may be somewhat of a breakthrough in the non-FZ30/50 superzoom category... ...gotta love that Leica 28-504 lens!

The free program every starting amateur should have, Irfanview. Plugins used are Neatimage (for NR) and Focalblade (for sharpening). As for Neatimage, I did a quick scan at the upper left corner of the pictures and applied the automatic profiles that were created. Takes about 10 seconds per fullsize picture.

I could have used Photoshop, but when I'm in a hurry I somehow always grab Irfanview.

Thank you artfix50.

Impressive shots. Wider at wide, farther at tele, but that's to be expected from the specs. I'm amazed (again) by the border to border clarity.

Note especially the wide FZ8 lower right corner - the difference in blurriness. To be honest though, this FZ8 shot seems to be slightly out-of-focus overall.
Very encouraging.

I'm well aware of the forum rules and I don't say anything personal about you. However, I did attempt to make a humorous remark about the monotonous nature of your posts.

I'm glad that you brought up the forum rules. Here's one that I wish you would follow:

Bashing - Deliberately and repeatedly bashing the same brand, product or company will get you banned. If you have a complaint or comment to make then make it once and make sure you have facts to support it.

Especially note the phrase....."make it once". That doesn't mean to have one comment that you make over and over again.

Steve you are a fan..nothing wrong with that, but incapable of reasoned views on panasonic cameras. Do you see me getting bans? No...

I raise important issues that span a number of brands..on of which is pixel pumping, over zealous NR processing is another one. That isnt brand bashing..I back up my comments with reason. Bashers dont..

You may be happy with pannies hit it hard smash it to pieces approach. I can assure you I and many others are not.

Debate is that. I said some positive things too, if you dont like what I say, very sorry it upsets you..move on.
Especially note the phrase....."make it once". That doesn't mean to

And what exactly do you do? Aside from "to the bitter death" defence of the issues I raise.

Do these samples look better than some previous pannies? Yes a bit. Is it great..no its not. Is there more to be done? Yes..of course.

If you dont like what I say..then its just well...tough luck. A debate is that..but you never see me do some things that others do..

1: Mock or insult other people
2: Attack or put down people's photographs.

Now if you want to go hunting for those type of posters, fire away..we dont need them anyway.

If my "hard" comments are to much to bear..consider this phrase:

"It's just a lump of metal/plastic/glass, how can you get upset about that?"

Exactly.......

I am not a "fan" of any particular brand. You are making an assumption while at the same time ignoring the forum rules.....MAKE YOUR COMPLAINT ONE TIME.
I raise important issues that span a number of brands..on of which is

brand bashing..I back up my comments with reason. Bashers dont..
You're making up your own definitions. Forum rules say to make your complaint once. If you have two different complaints.....fine. Make two separate posts. The forum rules are pretty clear.....do not make the same complaint over and over again, which is pretty much all you ever do here.
Debate is that. I said some positive things too, if you dont like
what I say, very sorry it upsets you..move on.
I don't see any serious debates going on. For example, on this thread, you claim that ISO 400 is unacceptable to you. Others say that ISO 400 is OK for them.....no debate, just a different defintion of acceptable.

No one is seriously arguing with you. The point is that you only say one (OK, you claim two) thing over and over again.
If you dont like what I say..then its just well...tough luck.
And if you don't want to be called monotonous, find something knew to say.

Forgive my ignorance. Did you use the Neatimage and the Focalblade plugins for Irfanview? I could not find such plugins on the Irfanview web page. I know it is not the topic of the thread. I am interested in software for image processing (noise reduction), but I am unwilling to pay for Photoshop. Freeware like Irfanview would work for me.
Mike.
