Now that OSX runs on the intel platform, can you purchase a Dell machine and run OSX?

No there are chips built into the motherboards to keep you from doing that ... one of the biggest problems PC's have is everybody builds everything with its own driver and names them the same. Supporting so many poorly designed parts is a nightmare that for some reason MS seems to think it needs to do and apple should never do.

Unfortunately not. There are some hacked versions of OSX that will let you do it. But your will get no support from Apple or the hardware manufacturer.

As a company Apple has always been primarily a hardware vendor.

Even if you tried installing one of the hacks, you will not have anything reomotely resembling the OS X experience on non-apple hardware.

Thanks for the information. It was worth a shot.

Not that I recommend it, or is it legal, or would I consider it a good use of time, ...however.... there is a thing known as a "hackintosh", and with some hardware, and a slightly modified OSX install distro, people are successfull installing, and running OSX on generic hardware including Dell's. Most of the information is at the osx86project.org's wiki http://wiki.osx86project.org/ or see the "Homebrew Macs" at http://forum.insanelymac.com/

If you are bored to tears, and have nothing else to do with your time, it can be an amusing exercise. Really, I don't recommend it because you will spend all your time with obscure hardware driver issues, etc. even with the most "compatible" of setups.

You can purchase a Mac and run Windows on it. I think the Mac hardware is better than the run of the mill PC, though probably equal to higher end PCs

Why on God's Green Earth would you want a Dell? They are utter garbage - I've seen them all and the last I'd ever buy is a Dell.

But, no - OSX is only supported on Mac hardware.

I just found where my company offers a discount ~$300 on a Mac Pro.

I don't have the time to hack something together where my family can use it.

Be careful. Mac prices are pretty standard except for amazon rebates and things like that. Is this a current model? Does it come with all the requisite disks? There are not big differences in mac prices from legitimate dealers the way there can be for PCs. Make very, very sure the seller is on the level. (If it's on ebay, don't even think about it!)

Right now I really wish my PC back... My Mac cannot even read my 4GB CF card through USB! (see my post from yesterday).

It seems that Apple is using crappy chips not sticking to industry standards. :(

I think the company he works for has some sort of rebate program if he buys an Apple product. Many companies have employee purchase deals with Apple.

Only my opinion. It's worth what you paid for it. Your mileage may vary! ;-}
