Panny 18x 28mm superzoom

Question here is are there any imporvements done to the Sensor and to the Venus Engine's noise management.

CCD (Image Sensor) 1/2.5", 8.32 Total Mega Pixels CCD

1/2.5' 8 mp sensor is noisy even in Canon/Sony
I don't wanna know what happens with 1/2.5' 8 mp Panasonic sensor :(

I think the decimal place got shifted along the line.

1st blunder spotted....so what's next??

Looks more like a H9 equivalent...only more zoom at 18x vs 15x and a wider offering @ 28mm vs 31 mm.

Or the Olympus 18x SP550 UZ equivalent, which is a real blunder, IMO.

But if Panasonic live to its speed and keep the corner sharpness and minimal barrel distortion through the zoom range, this will give Canon a run for its money (with the S5, @ only 12x zoom and starts at 36mm).

Geez....I'm already thinking selling my S5 for this...

if the IQ from the lens is more or less the same.

sensor is still 1/2.5". too bad (a 1/1.8 would have been interesting).
lovely lens range but.... 6400 ISO? Is that a joke? ;]

The specs were wrong... on the panasonic japan site there are the correct ones ;-)

Mohdya, I'm thinking of purchasing the s5 so I'm just curious, why is this making you consider selling the s5 (wider?).

This doesn't have a hot shoe, swivel LCD, and probably won't have as good video. Obviously if your not happy with the s5's IQ, this would be compelling.

Just curious.

it looks good on paper except for the sensor......at any rate, maybe it will give Canon a run for their money. Wide angle....Leica long lens makes it tempting.....we'll see.

This doesn't have a hot shoe, swivel LCD
but it has:
  • 18x zoom
  • 28mm wide angle
  • RAW support
I guess that these are the features that many people would have liked in the S5, more than the swivel LCD and hot shoe...

That's why the Oly SP550 caused so much commotion: Canonists calmed down only when it was shown that the SP550 image quality was not so good.

But we know that PanaLeica can make considerably good lenses (even better than Canao), so... will the FZ18 have a 28-504mm lens that will be as sharp as the S5 lens, and with comparable (or even less) distorsion? It might well be!

So the story will now start again: will the FZ18 be better than the S5? We know that Panasonic has some problems with noise (though the new Canon compact cameras also have high noise levels, and the difference IMHO is almost completely in noise reduction approach), and that it does not have the acclaimed Canon colors (I'm not sarcastic, this is probalby true). Anyway, the FZ18 will probably be a serious S5 contestant...
and probably won't have as good video
Well, we don't know yet!

say RAW. The wide angle and RAW ability make this an attractive package. Let's see what Canon offers this fall, maybe at the next PMA conference.

but it has:
  • 18x zoom
I'm starting to scare that zoom will start a new "megapixel race" in future. A bit is surely useful but keep in mind lens are not magic, you can't go up too much without paying something in quality, distorsion, vignetting and so.
  • 28mm wide angle
  • RAW support
about these nothing to say. I'd have preferred a 10x and a 28mm wide in S5 rather than current one, and RAW (or at least uncompressed format) should be a standard in any camera. I still can't believe there's ppl that base their decision if buying a dslr or a p&s on the presence of that feature (as Canon is trying to convince us).

The TZ3 is a considerable step up in image processing from the TZ1, so maybe this new FZ18 will have adequate processing after all. The lens should be good, Panny (Leica) lenses on their front line cameras are always good. Assuming this is a decent package, it is another push on the entire market, which can only make for better cameras and more choices for us, the consumers.

Bravo, Panasonic! Now kindly develop a low noise sensor, please....

was the first to bring down the price of the DSLR significantly. Maybe the $399 tag on this will do the same for the higher end P&S cameras......just maybe - if the camera is any good. :-)

I was thinking buying an S5.
I have now to consider the FZ18 alternative.

Very interested in 18x and 28mm (waiting to see how FZ18 manage this)
But I wish the FZ18 had that kind of flip out screen as the S5 or H9
