I've had the D80 for two weeks, and the D200 since January. Out of the camera, at least, I'm liking the D80 more. Yes, I sense lightning coming my way.

D200 is more solid, yadayadayada, but darn....I'm liking the D80.

No opinion counts but yours. You might list some of the main reasons you like the D80 over the D200.

The D200 is the first DSLR camera I purchased. I knew when I purchased it I was going to have to spend time learning how to use it. Fortunately I found Thom Hogan's ebook which was worth every penny it cost.

There are many posts which ask: What camera should I buy? There is no one answer for everyone. Cost, complexity, weight, size, available lenses, etc.. must be considered by each person.

Lightning - Remember, you have the right to be wrong! (LOL).

Been there, done that!

The D200 is a wonderful machine but the portability of the D80 won me over. I hesitated selling the D200 but I've not regretted it and the D80 delivers everything that I needed from the D200.

And I even like the Matrix Metering!! Old chrome shooter syndrome, I guess!

Now we can both don our flameproof suits :)

Many of us could have bought either, I still can, but I chose the D80. The D200 is a tank.

I think the D80 may have benefited a bit from Nikon's experience with the D200. Just like the D40(x) is reported to have better out of camera JPEGs than the D80. The cameras are just targetted toward slightly different buyers, although there is a bit of overlap in them. However, the D200 still a good camera in the right hands. ;)

I tried out the D80 today in Circuit City. Lots of external buttons and a big bright viewfinder. I only wish that it was slightly bigger since I have large hands. I wonder how much better it would be if a vertical grip was attached.

Funning you should mention that. Several readers have posted reviews of the vertical grip in the past couple of days. They shouldn't be more than a page or two back in the forum history. Most of them have been very favorable. I might look into it myself after I get another lens or two and a Speedlight.

Won't the vertical grip add a lot weight ? Or no ? It's a little plastic and two batteries instead of one right ?

That seems like too much to me. Maybe I'm wrong. I find a little discomfort when I hold the camera for extended periods of time. I think a hand strap will help a lot. I'm pretty sure I'll order one when I next place an order with B&H.

I have not held a D200 but I am very satisfied with the D80. It's been an absolute blast and a joy to own. I should have bought a DLSR a long time ago.

Out of cam results should be pretty similar. I love my D80, but will be buying a d200 in the future, both are great cams and will give excellent results in the right hands... But I think I might like the speed of the 200. That and the sync port. That said the d200 is a large heavy camera that is not for everyone.
Cheers, Peter.

I've heard this a lot, and seen the results. When helping a customer decide between these two cameras, besides the build quality and feature differences, I will always suggest the D80 for the photographer who doesn't wish to post-process much.

In my opinion, the D200 out-of-camera shots are more neutral, but slightly higher quality, allowing you to get the most out of the image with some post-processing. The D80 on the other hand, marketed towards a more amateur crowd, produces excellent images out of the camera.

It is much easier to go directly from a D80 to the printer than with the D200. With that said, I have yet to come across anyone who has bought one or the other and regretted it.

I looked and looked and looked, and sat on the fence a while, and looked some more. I got lucky, and had the money in the bank for a d200, now I have a d80 and and tokina 12-24. For the Differences that matter, I traded the extra 2FPS for a lens!

That is the beauty of the Nikon lineup, large overlap in image quality, and rich choice of features at the price points.

The D40x would never work for me and the primes I own! Has nothing to do with image quality.

As a D80 owner I chose the D80 because of the weight factor and frankly I could not see that many great features in the D200 that I could not live without. My only regret was the SD cards I had to buy to replace all the CF from my D70.But now 4 Gig SDHC's have dropped to $49.00 and I am able to shoot all I want without changeing cards too often.
