Mt. Rainier

I woke up the other morning and could see a red glow happening as the sun rose. I grabbed my Xti and ran out to grab a shot. By the time I found a good spot, the sun had risen enough that the cool red glow was gone.

Even though I missed the cool sunrise, I got a couple of shots of Mt. Rainier that I liked. I've lived here in the Seattle area for 15 years now and I'm still blown away by the sight of this mountain on a clear day. I took these shots by the Redhook brewery in Woodinville, WA., which is about 60 miles away from the mountain itself.

As a co-Pacific Northwesterner, you are spot on about Mt. Rainier. Any Cascade peak makes my jaw drop no matter how many times you see them. For lack of a better word, their presense is awesome.

I like your first shot better. I think the composition in the second is great with the foreground, middle and background, but the grass is a little soft and I dont like the homes on the hillside. I think you are of the same impression because in the first shot you naturally cropped the houses out.

Furthermore, even if the grass was in focus, I dont think its necessary because it takes away from the focul point which is-for me at least- the mountain. I suppose, however, that is viewer preference.

Other than that, great location and shot. Early bird gets the worm, but now you can at least set the alarm and get the glow your looking for!

Loved the shots - especially the first one. I bet you could get some of the glow back in PP, but I like them the way they are. I spent 2 summers in the Woodinville area and I have fond memories of riding the multi-use trail to Redhook for lunch! Thanks for the nostalgia.

Thanks for the comments. The brewery is a great place. I have a lot of fond (and some hazy) memories of hanging out there. They have bands on Saturday nights and sometimes outisde on the deck during the summer. We always have a good time there.

Thanks for the comments Bmurph. I agree and do like the first one better. I often take several shots from several different angles and positions and it often makes my head hurt trying to decide which I like best.

Hello from Holland,
Some years ago my wife and me were at relationvisit in the State of Washington.

We drove about 4000 km. all over the State. So impressed we were of the Cascades Mountains and the beautiful monster Mt. Rainier. I should like to see all this another time, but we only can have a look by pictures.

We cannot forget the woods and the coasts of the Pacific, how nice is Washington State. Thanks for the pictures.

Both shots are great but I like the first one the best myself. The pipe helps to lead your eye into the shot.

I like the first one, too. The 2nd one is nice, but the grass is a little distracting.

And Rudi, your shot is amazing, too.

I'm from Seattle originally but pretty much grew up in Arizona. I went back a couple of years ago but didn't get any shots like that.

Great shots of the mountain!

I live in Alabama but back in 1998 I took a 5-day mountaineering course/summit attempt on Mt Rainier. I loved my time on the mountain and the whole area out there is waaay beautiful!

I too, like your first shot better, I like the sprinklers viewed from more of an angle than straight on.

I'll be in Seattle in August for a couple of days following an Alaskan crusie, hope to get some good shots around town and maybe get lucky with the mountain again.

Beautiful shots and you're right on. I've lived here in Seattle for over 50 years and I've climbed Rainier several times, hiked the full Wonderland Trail twice, and cycled around it and it still stuns me when you can see it in full glory.

Try Kerry Park in Seattle for some good sunrise and sunset shots of it.
