Hummingbird moth (img)*

Very nice, and rare. I first saw this moth 2 years ago in our garden, grabbed my camera and took a few shots, but unfortunately they all were out of focus.

That was the first time, and the last time i saw it.They are very rare here in The Netherlands, on the coast at least.

for looking and commenting! The moth and I both appreciate it!

John, darn it, you let the cat (I mean moth) out of the bag! How did you notice? ;-)

For those that have never seen one, they are quite small (around an inch or a little more long) and are easliy overseen in the flowers when butterflies are also present. Plus, they are shy and often quickly depart when one gets close. One trait that most of them show is trap lining or coming back to the same blossums at roughly the same time every day. That can help in getting set up for a shot (if it isn't raining every 5 minutes as it has been here for the past few days). In Europe they are often called the bee moth or the Taubenschwänzchen.

No matter what they are called, I think they are marvelous little creatures and I love watching them!

It looks like a flying cocoon, Busch!

Very clean, well composed action shot.
