Weekly Sports Thread, starting June 30

Thanks Matty,

I used my 30D with the 200 f/2.8L + Canon 1.4x TC. As the weather conditions were changing every 15 minutes (T-storms were moving in), I used Av mode, aperture set to wide open (f/4 with the TC), Ai Servo AF, Cfn. 4-3, 5 fps, center focus box, center weighted average metering, Cloudy WB, ISO varied from 200 to 800, increasing as the cloud cover increased and darkened.

When I want fielding shots, with right handed batters, I keep the * button pressed and aim the camera at the shortstop, waiting for a potential play to that side of the field. If a left handed batter, I focus on the 2nd baseman.

I've learned that in baseball, the photographer has to be a fast as the camera. :o)

Hope this helps.

The best thing that could poke you in the eye....is your viewfinder.

i own a 200mm fixed also, and the quality is just amazing. a world different than any 70-200 zoom in AF speed and sharpness.

and mine also works extremely well with 1.4x TC (eventho mine is sigma haha).

every 70-200 zoom i've used i had to stop it down 1 more stop to 'clean up the image'. not so with the fixed 200mm.

....and of course my 300 f2.8 it's just a tad better hehe :)

Some of the best MX pictures I can recall.

I like the light. With very nice calm backgrounds, "fluffy" nice brown soil and shallow DOF, you have achieved a good isolation of the subject. Beautiful!

...you could try using slightly slower shutter speed and panning to get some sense of motion, I think the pictures are very good apart from the frozen wheels that I feel make the pictures a bit static. Some motion can help convey the energy and speed of the sport.

Yeah I have a few from that day that show more motion but the weather was so bad starting with rain, sun comes out, more rain, more sun etc, that I decided to get as many sharp shots as I could in the 3 hours we were allowed to be there.

I would have loved to get more experimental stuff but time was growing short.

Thanks to all!
