Weekly Sports Thread, starting June 30

Hi Roger,

I used my 30D with my 200 f/2.8L + Canon 1.4x TC. This combo works very well, alot better than even I anticipated. I did post process each shot....cropping, slight levels adjustments, noise reduction (used ISO400 up to ISO640, due to low daylight because of impending thunderstorms) and USM. However, the original pics were still fairly sharp for using a TC.

I had 1st row seats behind 1st base, where the infield dirt meets the outfield grass. About 45 degrees to my left was 1st base and about 30 degrees to my left was second base. The lens combo is too long for plays at 1st base, but is perfect for the 2nd baseman, plays at 2nd, the pitcher and home plate. Its a little short for the shortstop, 3rd baseman and the outfield. Requires more cropping. :o)

The best thing that could poke you in the eye....is your viewfinder.

Thanks...that's a concern for me in some of my shots...but I'm often prefocusing on the base or batter, so I don't think I'm locking in on the background. Does the added magnification of the TC decrease the margin of focus error? Is it a function of the TC coupled with my XT body? When I shoot my son's 9-10-year-old baseball with the 70-200 and no TC, I get razor-sharp shots. I don't think my technique is any different at MLB games (though the distances are greater)...so I'm a bit baffled. Interested to hear what others have to say about these shots.

Also: for all these shots, I used one-shot focus. Our next O's game is vs. White Sox in two weeks...perhaps I'll shoot only in servo mode to see if there's a difference (oh...and I use center-point focus).

Thanks again for the feedback.

Roger,
Mind sharing a few examples of your shots with XTi and 70-200 without the TC?

Thanks

Here's one more from little league, as an example of a hastily-captured shot of action at 3rd base:

And here's one from a previous O's game, shot at 200mm w/o TC:

Good series of hoops shots and I gotta say you got some great stuff
on sports shooter. The wrestling good twisted up, the stiff arm from
little number 5, and the poor girl getting wacked in the head with
the lacrosse sticks are some of my favorites. Very impressive
