I've had my g2 for about a week. QN: When working with RAW files, editing of files is done by converting to TIFF first...What's the difference TIFF vs. JPEG(high resolution)? What's a good photo editing pgm to use?
Thanks.

TIF is lossless -- it saves all the photo information. JPG is lossy -- it throws away information it thinks you'll never miss. If you plan on editing a photo and you're going to the additional trouble of shooting RAW, you should save in TIF.

The Photoshop that likely came with your G2 is an excellent editing program. You can find my workflow here...

That will not only get you started, it may be all you ever need. By the way, I mention that I use the full version of Photoshop (rather than the LE version that comes with the G2). It shouldn't matter. My workflow doesn't use layers or actions, so the LE version should work fine.

Good luck.

Tiff is a lossless-compression method, mostly used for quality printing.
Jpeg offers high compression rates but degrades image quality.

High resolution jpeg offers good quality but alters the overall picture, you can't get the original informaton back.Saving again into another jpeg compression value degrades the image further.
Jpeg is widely used for quick exchange of files.

Don,
I just checked your workflow. It is similar to what I do,
except I use Digital Light & Color's Picture Window instead
of Photoshop. One quick question. Where do you set the
contrast, saturation and sharpness settings on your G2??
Hi Don,

I leave all three zeroed out. I know there is some probably some merit to setting them all to -1, but I try to rein in my search for perfection and settle for something that looks good to me. Maybe one of these days I'll test both settings. In any case, I would never set any of them to +1.

Also, contrary to what you think might think, some of us listened to your recommendation of Picture Window. It seems like I tried it out a couple of years ago and then uninstalled it, but I've downloaded it again. You are a fount of common sense and if you're recommending the program, it's worth another look. I'll let you know what I find.

What exactly is high res. JPEG?

(I have yet to use RAW but thinking about it.)

I take the G2's superfine Jpeg's straight into PS 5.0 LE do some leveling and an unsharp mask and re-save as a jpeg. When I save as a jpeg it asks me what quality (1-10). I usually use 8 or 9.

Any sugestions?

(I use ofoto often and they only except jpeg so my final save needs to be jpeg.)
