I have a few helpful pics to help judge IQ (smearing and chromatic aberration) quality from the S5IS. Since I am on dial-up currently, it will take me a little while to upload some of the pics resized to 800x600.

I just visited PBase.com and there are file size and time based limitations that do not make it worth my while in opening a trial account. Is there any other reliable web site which allows FREE hosting of full size pics for unlimited time? If someone can point me to one such site, then I can also upload the original the full size pics.

==============================================

NOTE: These were all taken in AUTO mode handheld (with IS switched on) without flash. No PP or sharpening was done to any of them. Other than resizing, all these pics are straight out of the camera.

The photographer is my niece who hasn't much experience in handling digicams such as the S5IS. The poor girl was quite intimidated and I just explained to her the following: to pre-focus first by gently pressing the shutter button; to frame the shots keeping the verticals as vertical as possible; and to try to keep as steady a hand while gently pressing the shutter. After two trial shots followed by a little more on-the-spot 2-minute training, I gave her the camera.

I hope this thread can also be useful as a kind of test of the S5IS's capability when used by a first time rank amateur in AUTO mode both indoors and outdoors.

Picture 4 taken at 1/13" and Picture 5 taken at 1/8", both handheld. Now that's what I call impressive. Your niece should be congratulated for her steady hands and it looks like the IS on the S5 does a pretty good job. Thanks for the pictures and your informative posts.

Yeah... the IS on both the S3IS and the S5IS is indeed impressive. The zooming in and out action may be a little smoother on the S5IS. For photo quality, I do not think it is worth upgrading from an S3IS to the S5IS unless one really feels the need to use the flash hot shoe or wishes to enjoy a bigger brighter LCD. That is because both cameras have really decent IQ.

I am currently judging how the S5IS handles smearing with its Digic III processor. I have noticed smearing and I would very much like to point this out clearly to all of you by uploading some full size original pics, but someone needs to point me to a reliable FREE online photo hosting site without time limitations or file size limitations.

It is a bit too early to tell for sure at this stage, but I am generally pleased to find that the smearing in the Canon S5IS is better than the smearing rendered by the Sony H9. The S5IS takes a more conservative and well controlled approach to smearing... i.e. it smears within a tight tonal range and it smears neatly without a lot of 'bleeding' or 'blotching'.

I have a few pictures where I can clearly show the areas where such smearing has taken place. So someone please kindly point me to a reliable FREE online photo hosting site without time limitations or file size limitations because Flickr and Pbase both have either file size or time based limitations.

To me pictures #1 and #5 look really orange.
The AWB has really done a great job with Picture 1. This was how it environment really looked through my eyes.

Picture 4, similarly, is how the environment really looked through my eyes. So great job there again. But you are correct about Picture 5 (which is simply a portion of Picture 4 zoomed in.) I fully agree with you that Picture 5 has indeed been rendered a little bit too much orangy when compared to the same area in Picture 4 (which shows realistic color due to the fluorescent indoor lighting.)

I've used villagephotos.com and imagecave.com to host full sized photos free for demonstrating pictures on these forums - though they limit the file size so what you gain in resolution and pixels you lose in more compression artifacts. Also they limit the amount of downloads your account is accessed so if you post on a busy forum under a post like "My amazing pro-level pictures with the eagerly awaited newest Canon model" you'll find after a few hundred peple have loaded your pictures your account will be frozen!

Picasa gives you 1 G and no limit on the size of individual photo.
Hi Victor,

I am a fan of your work! And I also always value your opinions in these forums which indicate your depth of experience in the field of photography.

I just looked at Picasa Web Albums and read the following paragraph below:

With Picasa Web Albums, you get 250MB of free storage--enough to post and share approximately 1,000 photos for free. But it's so easy to put your photos online that you just might want more storage. For $25 a year, you can upgrade to an additional 6GB of space (25,000 photos' worth).

Could you explain a little better how to avail of 1GB free space?
