Hi Hailey

I dont know that much about the H9....but I believe only Sony make a special lens......cos of the adapter...its got a very large thread...and none of the conventional lenses will fit it...not even one for the H2....

...search here for adapteer rings...there is a company (Pamaraal, or something like that) makinig adapter rings.

The H2 and H5 use a 58mm thread, the H9 is 74mm, so without an adapter, the older lenses will not work.

As with previous models Sony supplies a lens adaptor ring and a rather unwieldy bayonet-fit lens hood that adds considerably to the bulk of the camera but is essential for avoiding flare on bright days. If you like to use filters on the front of your lens be warned: the lens adapter has a huge - and decidedly non-standard - 74mm thread.

Hailey,

It's impossible to give a general answer to this, as there are important side issues to consider.

Firstly, just to clarify and emphasise one essential ingredient, remember that you'll need a secondary adapter, to go on the front of the supplied Sony 74 mm one, in order to attach something like a 58 mm filter.

What you're looking for is correctly called a "step-down ring", and the first stumbling block here is that 74-to-anything is in the "hen's teeth" category, simply because 74 mm is NOT an industry-standard size (the nearest are 72 and 77 mm).

OK, supposing that you can find a 74-58 mm step-down ring, then the answer is still variable because of the possibility of vignetting. You'll most likely be OK at the telephoto end, but at wide-angle you could well run into trouble, especially when using a polarising filter since it's typically thicker than most others. I expect you'd also get by quite happily with a 58 mm close-up lens, because you'd be using that towards the telephoto end in any case (you do NOT normally use the camera's own "Macro" setting when working with supplementary CU lenses).

The other thing would be if you're planning to use a telephoto or wide-angle conversion lens with your H9 (you just said "lenses" without being specific in this regard). Everything written about the H series to date has to be set aside, with this, and "the book rewritten" because of the H9's entirely new lens assembly. What worked well with previous H models may or may not do so with the H7/H9, and that goes for Sony as well as 3rd-party lenses.

I strongly suggest that you check out the following thread before committing yourself to a purchase just yet, because (1) the Pemaraal adapter situation is a work-in-progress, and more direct solutions (bypassing the Sony tube and step-down ring) may become available and (2) I can't see what your rush is about to buy filters for this camera. It's clearly something with which you're just starting up the learning curve that we all face, and filters (and such) simply aren't essential to mastering the camera; in fact you can impede the learning process if you throw in too many variables at the one time.

Tape a lens that doesn't fit onto my camera???? No thanks. I'll stick with the ones that fit correctly and keep the sticky goo mess off of my camera...just my preference :-)
