Get E-510 now, or wait for E-X?

What to do, what to do?

I have been playing with the E-510 over the weekend, and I like it, but the tiny body is not as comfortable as my old E-1. I love the 10MP, the IS and the snappier operation. But I just can't get used to the menu-fiddling when changing settings, even though Olympus "quick menu" is quite clever.

The uncertainty of the specs, price and release date of the E-X is giving me a headache, if the E-X is late, or expensive, I would just get the E-510 now, and wait until the E-X prices drop a bit.

If E-X comes out as early as August, it would hardly be worth it to get the E-510 for 6 weeks...

What to do... what to do....:)

I had the same concerns. In the end I decided that having the E-510 as a backup for an E-3 would make more sense than either my E-1 or my E-330. I figured that once I got used to having 10mp images and IS I wouldn't want to go back. That's already the case and I've only had the E-510 since Friday evening.

I intend to sell the others on ebay and use the funds toward an E-3 whenever it finally comes out.

I'm also having a headache with the E-510 decision. I think the improved performance at ISO 800/1600 together with the IS, are the two key benefits.

The two mini kit lenses for the broad photograhic range, for a minor cost, might be most logical to have included. There are several opportunities, where the total light weigt package is an advantage.

Folks with the 510 please comment on viewfinder of E510 vs the E1.

Thanks,

Dan

I am considering the same thing. I think I will probably end up with the E-510 but i want to wiat until I know more about the new E-1 replacement. Maybe the 510 price will have come down some to. Bruce

Until I end up finding out more about the E-1 replacement... I'll hold off for now. I do plan to find one and do some "comparison" shots w/both my E1 and my K10D to see how the IQ stacks up.

This could end up making a decision to "buy", but there are still "to me" things missing from the E510 in it's price point that I feel sure the E-1 replacment will have.... things I will (and already do) use in a cam body.

Hi Jon, Can't tell you which one to buy, but will tell you that I am getting the E510 for myself(on order). For me, the lighter weight and small size is very important and am not so sure if E3 or whatever it might be called, will be much better in image quality. And even if the image quality is better for the E3, my choice still would be for the E510 for the above reasons. If you do want a robust body and weather sealing, then wait for the E3 as it will probably be as good as is the older E1.

I am not so sure that it will have major differences over the E510, but some differences could be in fps(mayhbe 5fps as compared to 3fps for the E510? Just guessing though).

Looking at your reasons for not completely liking the E510: Why not wait and see what the E3 will offer?

The thought of having all those advancements, and not giving up that magnificent feel that my E1 has, is just too tempting.

I like my E330, and it tends to get more use than my E1 these days. But I do miss that rock solid feel, that bright viewfinder, and the ability to control just about anything I need to, without doing the 'menu shuffle'.

That is, of course, if the E3 hits the $1800 price tag that it's rumored to have.

How times change. It wasn't that many years ago when paying $1800 for an E-10 was considered a bargain.

Hi Raymond.

Where are you getting it? I'm on waitlist at fotovideo Oslo, and they keep pushing the estimated time of arrival every day now... I'm also pondering waiting for the E-x.

Thankfully, I live in a toy crazy/photographic family. My daughter is going to inherit the E-500, The E510 will be my husband's(though, I really LOVE it) and the E-3 is going to be mine when it comes out. We are going to sell the L1, which is a fine camera and I have no complaints on, it just is different enough from the menus of the Oly's to make it the odd man out. My E-1 is special and will not leave. Even if it is just a dust collector

I don't usually leave without 2 bodies on me. So, having both the 510 and the E-3 makes the most sense for me. Not to mention it keeps my husband and I from fighting over cameras

I have to say I LOVE the IS

Fortunately, bad fortune will force me to wait until August or September, anyway. So I will evaluate at that time.

It is a consumer viewfinder with 95% coverage instead of 100%, and you can't put an Olympus FS-2 in it (though I imagine Katz will come out with one). I did have one or two shots where I was used to carefully framing the shot ala the E-1, and extra stuff appeared in the picture, but it is easy to crop that out. I would.

I would prefer the status information on the bottom instead of the side, but it is real nice to have the ISO displayed in the VF. It is annoying having a red dot to indicate which focus point you are using when you have the focus points locked to the center, but that is being picky.

Hi all,

I Have just bought an E510 must be one of the first in the UK,as they are in short supply! Park cameras seems to be one of the few shops selling them at present,I own the E1,E500,& E400, and find that compared to the E1'S veiwfinder the E500 & E400 veiwfinders are poor and that you must physically swivel your eyeball to take in the readout on the right of the veiwfinder!,so I have been useing the ME1 magnifiying eye cup, which makes it a little easier to see,BUT HAVE FOUND THE VEIWFINDER ON THE E510 MUCH EASIER TO USE!!.

Don't know if the viewfinder is physically larger but most importantly as i wear glasses it's far better and i don't have to strain to see the readout, not as good as the E1 but okay for the price, and its a fantastic camera, and you won't be disapointed in any way with the live veiw & IS it's a canon and nikon beater IMO. in fact i haven't used my canon 20d since getting the E1 late last year, and since then have switched over big time to the OLY camp, despite haveing lots of glass and various cannon related gadgets, must get round to Ebaying all that kit only thing is do i sell it all as a complete photographers kit,or sell it Individually.
All the best
Patrick

I also have the E-330 and can not justify getting either the 410 or 510. I really like the 330 and the 510 does not add enough to make me want to spend on another body. Either the E-3 or a Pany version of the 510 would be my next purchase. A Pany 510 with manual controls like the L-1 would be a blast with the 25mm f1.4. That actually is my preference over the E-3.

I saw the 510 in person and really love the design and size. However, it doesn't seem to have a vertical grip available. There's also no focus confirmation when using a MF lens. I am already using another DSLR (canon Rebel, although a bit old) so I can afford to wait and see what the E-X is about.

Jon, I think you will like it. I have really liked this camera so far. I was ok with the 500, and the L1, but, I really like this one. I always preferred my E-1, but, this one may replace it until the E-3 comes along.

Then, my husband can have it mostly to himself
