The rumors has Pentax coming out with 2 new camera and possible updates to exsisting camera. Plus the company is trying to fill niches. The question will be where are the niches that needs filling. In the non-proffesional camera lines Nik0n has the D40, D40x, D80 and the D200 , while Can0n has the Rebel XTi and the 30D and Olympus has the new e-410 and the e-510. The D40, the e-410 and the K100D are tries to hit the "low-end", intro market. The D80, XTi and the e-510 tries to hit the mid-level market. The D200, 30D and K10D tries to hit the high-end (semi-pro) market. The D40x can either be considered to be just an upgrade to the D40 or trying to hig a niche between the low-end and mid-range camera. Also since no two cameras are the same spec-wise the ranges do over lap some.

I woud guess that Pentax will be coming out with a upgrade to the K100D. If it is really a upgrade it will reach the mid-level camera without much problem and compete with the D80, XTi and e-510. This will leave a low end gap that needs to be filled. Also with a upgrade to the K100D the spec gap between to K100D and K10D will be narrower and more difficult to fill. So this will lead to believe that the other new camera will be set to be a more pro type camera than the K10D. This will fill the gap between the D200 and the pro-cameras.

The next theory is that since at the time the K10D was being releasede there was stories that a more advanced camera was being developed. So now 6 months later and the stores can keep up with the K10D demand it might be time to get the more advance camera out to market. Also, if I was in marketing I would like to combine that more advanced camera with the new pro-level zooms. THis might be the real reason for the lelay in the DA* zooms. So just maybe in late summer we will see the new camera with the kit lenses being the DA* zooms.

Then by Christmas time a lower end camera will come out.

Now it is anybody's guess on what features these camera will have.

well a nice theory, the only rumour that I remember is that there will be something higher end than K10D out, but I am not sure whether this is the 2 new cameras coming out this year (or at least supposed to comeout, given that Pentax was prone to delays in the past)

Assuming that they come out I would assume that those will be updates to the current cameras...

What I would like to see however is a new 6MP chip with K100D body size and features plus high speed (5FPS+) and nice big buffer, HSM, to come with CRV batteries "in the box" and still have the ability to use AA's...

common sense is anything but common

The line will be as follows:

K100D
K200D or K50D
K10D
K1D/K5D

The K100 will be the current camera at a far cheaper price, to really challenge the mid level PoS cameras.

The K200D/K50D will be a 10mp version of the current k100, buffer increased to 5 RAW, streaming JPEG and KAF2 mount, no seals and the current lith battery that is in the K10.

The K10 we all love, will remain the same

the K1D/K5D will be a 5FPS+ , it will have a 18+ RAW buffer, faster card read and write speeds (the K10 peaks out at 16Mb/s), plus faster processing, weather seals (a given) and updated(uprated) SR same lith battery again.

This is my guesstimates, will be interesting to see how close i am.

From what I have read on all of the forums, it seems that there will be two new DSLR's and a Medium Format being the 645D. Will these replace the 100 and 10D or will they augment the current line?

Bob

It is not a rumour that Pentax will release two new DSLR's this fall.

The information was first seen in an interview with Pentax in Japanese magazines (translation published in this forum) about Pentax thinking, goal and future regarding cameras and lenses.

Then Bejamin Karajek, pro-photographer sponsored by Pentax France, had a meeting with Pentax France and got information from them about those two new DSLR's, he couldn't of course reveal detailed information about them, but he did confirmed that they will come.

More information about them (hopefully they will be on display) will be revealed at the PMA France 10th September.

I believe they will augment, the K100D is a good entry work horse, and there is room for a price drop, i could honestly see it going for a hell of a lot cheaper then it currently is. Next the K10D is not even a year old, i don't see it being replaced yet especially as it is the fastest SD camera available, the areas that the K10D and K100D are lacking are simply a higher class camera, the 10mp for the K100D could be suitable for a D40X type replacement, while the K10D needs an upgrade path. That is why i see the two new cameras to augment the line up, to have a model above the K10D and a modle in between the 100 and the 10, but knocking the 100 down a segment. Then again, no one has ever accused pentax of being logical.

Interesting, however... Pentax can not afford to have too many cameras on the market cluttering their product line like Nikon. From a financial. management, and manufacturing end I think you will end up with at least two cameras that slightly bridge buyers. Much like the K10D which completes with the D80 but also has a lot of the features of the D200.

so here is my guess:
  • K200D - D40/D40x (NEW CAMERA - Discontinue K100D, larger buffer, 10 MP)
  • K10D - D80, XTi
  • K1D - D200, 30D (NEW CAMERA - 4-5 fps, MagBody, more advanced AF/AE, 10 MP - 12 MP)
Pentax may come up with a DX/1D level body eventually. However i think it will depend on the success of the a K1D and the DA* lens line IMO.

I think his name is Benjamin Kanarek. I read his article on Pentax Forums.
