i just got my new viewsonic g225fb. on this monitor i will definitely notice any flicker if i go below 100hz, and it doesn't disappear completely till i hit 120hz. i can just sort of sense it at 100hz. the highest resolution i can get at 120hz is 1280x960.

also, if i compare 1600x1200 at 75hz on my old monitor to the same setting on this monitor, the flicker is more noticeable on this monitor. why is that?

CRT monitors have "persistence" time. That's the time that the phosphors on the screen continue to glow. A CRT with a short persistence time is necessary for movies and action, but then you can see flicker. A CRT with a longer persistence time will minimize flicker, but you might see some blurring in movies and stuff.

Sounds like you're very sensitive to flicker - everyone's different. I can't see flicker above 80 Hz or so on any monitor, sometimes I don't notice 60 Hz. You must have quick eyes!

I crave resolution, but it's personal. I'm running multiple 1600X1200 22" monitors because I like to see it all at once. Using less resolution won't limit you from doing anything I can do, but you may have to zoom, move, open and close windows a lot more than I do.

Do have fluorescent lights in your work area? Their 120 HZ flicker can beat with the CRT scan giving a noticeable "flicker" effect. Try compact fluorescents 20K Hz or tungsten lamps to see it the effect goes away.
