There is another problem with my G7. Whenever I want to take a picture of something witch is just a little bit bright, I'll get purple stripes on the dislay. At first they apear little and when I press the release halfway the stripes gets worse.

On the pictures there are not to bee seen, but on the display it looks awful and it bothers me as well.

I can't believe this is common. I am concerned and consider to bring the G7 back to the shop.
Do anybody has the same problem?

Here is an exemple.

Yes, it is common. Happens on my G7 as well, and several other cameras I've owned when shooting into bright light or light, brightly lit subjects.

Doesn't bother me, though. I don't think it's a defect--just a function of how the LCD works...

It's mentioned in the manual as standard behavior.

I've noticed weird effects on the screen of my G7 when shooting in the direction of the sun (it's kind of a brightness, perhaps it's the purple stripes, when focusing which makes it hard to see the image) . Guess I've learned to more or less ignore it since, as you mentioned, it doesn't appear in the photos.

Purple stripes on the display will also appear on recorded video. Beware! It is usually worse when subjects are backlit.

Hello richarddd, thank you for your reply.

But I don’t mean the narrow beams as mentioned in the manual on page 121.

There are large-area stripes on the display when shooting in the direction of the sun or something bright, especially when there are contrasts.

Today I have to decide if I give the Camera back. They have no other one on stock for change.

I think bright sun will have the same effect on all G7's. Look at it this way - if you look directly at a bright light do you seen things the same as you would normally. Whils the G7 is very good it is only a machine and has limits - as do most things in life.

This is normal with digital P&S cameras. With the live preview, the camera obviously is limited in how it can reduce the amount of light into the CCD and so they can become saturated. When you take the actual picture, the camera uses the exposure time to get the amount of light correct. You don't see this on (most) DSLR's because they don't even have live preview - you just have an optical viewfinder. Learn to live with it - it's a limitation of the dynamic range of the CCD.

After I tested 5 cameras in 3 different shops I found out, that all of them had the same appearance. It seems to be common but most of the users didn’t noticed. But once you know it, you will see it every time when it appears.
So I have to get use to it and don’t care anymore about it.

Thank you for all your friendly suggestions.

Cheers Michael

right up to the point I clicked the shutter and it did not show up on the photograph.

No sweat. I wouldn't worry about it. Many cameras will do this.
