Just wondering if the Canon Pro9500 will really be available May 15? If anyone finds any available I would appreciate a heads-up. Thanks!

Thanks Gary! I just ordered one through an Amazon retailer (Complete Photo USA). A little scared of them since I had never heard of them, but they have a decent record with Amazon, and had a few available in stock. My fingers are crossed.

The really interesting thing to me is how mysterious Canon continues to be about when this printer is supposed to be released. I talked to them twice today, and got very non-commital answers laced with "I don't knows". I usually buy via New York (B&H or Adorama), but they act like they know nothing too. I've been waiting since last year, so it seems like Canon should quit screwing around and let the public and dealers know their intentions.

Only got 4 prints through it, setup similar to 9000.

printing is slower, and so far i cannot match the 9500 output, not talking colour as this can be fixed when i get my papers profiled.

gloss differential is my main concern, and i see to much bronzing(correct term?) shading when viewed on an angle.

I dont see much difference in colour when viewing in different light temperatures which is one important factor to me.
Will report back when i have had more play time.

This is completed now. Very interesting. Looks like the 9500 and its inkset has been set up for a gloss and semgloss media bias with punchy (unrealistic?) colors. Deep blacks and matt media do not seem to be its strong points.

Darn, looks like there is still no printer in the affordable price brackets that will do it all.

I know i have bot done much with this machine yet, but if this the best it gets, mine will be up for sale!

not complaining, i wanted to jump early as i would have had (may still have) two similar machines to simplify workflow.

Kevin (and others of course), please tell us more about what you think about the Pro9500's performance, especially its image quality. Since it sounds like you also have the Pro9000, which one do you think produces better images - you indicate that the 9500 isn't faring all that well in comparison? Vincent's review of the Pro9500 on photo-i.co.uk also indicates that this printer has some distinct weaknesses, especially on Fine Art paper and in B&W when compared to the HP B9180 for instance.

Thanks!
Andrea

Didn't you post a while back that you couldn't stand the small ink tanks on your Pro9000?

I am surprised that you now have a Pro 9500 with the same size ink tanks!

Kind regards Katy

Sounds like the epson 3800 replacement is the way to go.

Cheers

From many of your posts I see that Canon Printers seem not to please you too much, especially regarding their ink capacity...why then would you buy another Canon printer with a small capacity cartridge. And it seems you are ready to sink it after hardly any usage or familiarizing yourself with the ins and outs of the machine. The reviewer from Photo-i had some concerns but overall he recommended it. I would love to hear what your commentary is after a month of trying out the various features with a variety of paper. This would add fair value to the collective constructive criticisms from everyone. I am thinking about getting one of these printers and I would really like to hear what you (and others) have to say after a fair trial.

Cheers

First impressions are first impressions and should be taken as such, and I think we can do that, even here. For good reason we're not in a position to impose trial periods and fair judgment on anyone here, whatever these may be. And Vincent certainly did not take a month to review the printer. It may very well be that the judgment on this machine will change or be refined over the next year (!) or so, but I'd still like welcome everyone's comments now, including Kevin's, about their experience with the Pro9500 and its sibling and/or competitors.

Yes katy, i did then go on to say that i could live with it because the print quality was worth it.

As i said, i tried the 9500 in hopes that the iprint quality would again be high, with the added benefit of similar workflow. sadly image quality just doesn,t appear (note, appear )to be as good with this printer.

In my above post i did not just slam the 9500, i said i realise i have not had the printer for long and would pas it on if i dont manage to improve on results.

Read my reply to katy

Again, read my reply to Katy, i actualy said i would pass it on if i dont manage to leverage better results

Obviously i will still have the printer in a few weeks time and will let you know my thoughts and final decision, one thing for sure, the irregular gloss surface will be here to stay, Epson is still the leader here, matt printing seems to be this printers weak point, time will tell.

Apologies for my lack of reading skills Kevin.

You seem to be in agreement with others I have read that the bronzing/glossy differential may well be the key problem for this pigment printer...I guess as it is for other pigment printers. I was hoping that Canon could crack that problem! Thanks for that observation. For me it may well be the deciding factor in sticking with a dye ink printer instead of going pigment; but we shall see.

Meanwhile I will look forward to hearing more of your experiences as well as those of others with the Pro 9500... both pro and con.

Best regards

I would have to say that time will tell with this printer....Maybe newer tweaks will render better results....I was basically looking for a printer with better results in the B/W dept. but it looks like the with the various paper types that this is not one of the strong suits of this printer ... It is still a very nice printer for what it does well ... I'm not ready to run right out an buy one now ... As B.B. King would say " the thrill is gone" ..... I'll be watching this printer more closely, and will be watching for anyone's review or opinions on this unit , but for now , I think that looking at the results from other printers that cost considerably less , that they look even better...I, like many others, was looking for a printer that would be better by all accounts , but I don't see that here , and now ...Maybe later ?????.....Jim
