Dear Phil,

I understand you have to bring the bacon home, but did you have to sell your soul? Can Amazon fire you whenever they want? What kind of protection does the contract give you as far as integrity is concerned? Sounds like another "money" deal to me that won't help out consumers of digital cameras!

The press release states DPR will stay a stand alone entity. I'm sure this helps out in sponsorship and reviews for Amazon as well as allowing some extra cash and time for DPR to expand and deliver. Don't shoot it down so fast, shoot it down if the content begins to suffer from here on out. ;)

I didn't shoot it down right away! I asked some fair questions. Can Amazon fire Phil whenever thay want? Is there any way this site can remain objective? Amazon could be a problem, yes/no?
Jake

Jake,

What an unfair and mean spirited post! What information gives you the basis for making such outrageous statements?

While there are appropriate questions and concerns regarding the future of the forums, there is absolutely no basis for taking this cheap shot at Phil's integrity. While I don't agree with all of his policies (or reviews), integrity is one area where Phil has been completely above board and set a high standard for others.

In fact, integrity is large part of the reason this site is popular, and perhaps a reason why it was an attractive property to Amazon. There is no reason to believe that this site will not continue to serve this community quite nicely. In fact, with new resources, it might offer even more. Proof will come in time. If it doesn't live up to current standards, that will leave room for someone else to come along and fill the gap.

There's nothing wrong in my book with Phil finding a pay day for the business risks he's taken, and for his hard work. Congratulations, and hope you continue to grow this site and community.

Jeff

You asked fair questions? The entire post, from title on, is combative and insulting. What bull. Just for practice, why not try asking some questions that are not insulting, but assume that something good comes out of this. Bet you can't do it.

I agree that Phil deserves a payday. God Bless Phil! The point is that he sold control of this site to the internet's number one retailer. It's all about money! If I was Phil, I'd do the same thing. However, it is never going to be an "objective site" again. Amazon.com owns it! They sell stuff, not review it!

Jake,

But you said "sell your soul" ....

Sure, Amazon sells stuff, and so does the New York Times and every other commercial news source. Some are better than others in separating editorial decisions and commercial decisions.

It's entirely possible for dpreview to be editorially independent from Amazon, but that its banner ads, etc., are revenue sources for Amazon. Makes a lot of sense, actually. Sure, dpreview could go down the tubes. But its far from a foregone conclusion. And its entirely possible that Phil now has less rather than more possible conflicts of interest. My point is that none of has the information necessary to pass ethical judgements, and until proven differently, Phil's track record is pretty darn good.

And by the way, who puts the bacon on your breakfast table? Presumably you're working for someone who hands over a paycheck. Should I assume that you've sold your soul to your employer?

Jeff my friend,

We have philisophical differences. As I have said, I'm glad Mr. Askey reaped down a great paycheck. More power to Phil!

Next paragraph, this site is owned by Amazon.com!
Jake

Jake,

Fair enough. We do have a philosophical difference. I'm willing wait and see how Phil executes the site from this point forward. I'd be concerned if Phil's nasty practice of selectively blocking url's extends to Amazon competitors, if the forums become less vital, or if the reviews & news becomes more seller and less buyer oriented.

If I was Amazon, I'd want this site to continue to be the most authoritative on the web. Time will tell how well Phil and Amazon navigate the conflict of interest issues.

Maybe Phil will take this money and run, and hopefully, make some good pics with all his cameras and lenses., or whatever. This site is history, because Phil was the site!

--Maybe we'll see what we see in some mags, big reviews (dripplingly positive and yet completely insubstantial) and full page mfg ads that "happen" to appear in the same issue?

Did I misread? The Press Release says Phil will continue to run the site.

OK -- so you don't believe the press release, or Phil's postings on the matter. Well, what can I say? We have more than a philosophical difference, it seems.
who puts out the press release, amazon or phil?

why on earth would Jeff Bezos purchase a very successfull website only to destroy what made it an excellent web site? Hummm?

I worked for Amazon.com long enough to know (at least at that time) that customer reviews (an Idea started with amazon.com) are not sensored and if you go look on their website there are 1000s of reviews of products sold on amazon.com that are anything but praise of the product. Some of the products sold are bashed to bits by reviewers. That's what I love about amazon.com.

I'm not concerned about this web site one bit. If I were to worry about anything it would be the fellows at amazon that used to "improve" work flow or other things regarding the site all the time! I hated all the "glitches" we had to go through! LOL
