well we both are right in a way. The flower is of Magnolia
soulanginiana (suacer magnolia) which is a deciduous variety of
Magnolia. Beause of the simmilarity of the flowers to a tulip many
call it (by mistake) a Tulip Tree. The commonly called magnolia is
Magnolia grandiflora which is indeed ever green and everything else
you have mentioned about it was correct too. However, there is such
a tree who's common name is tulip tree (Liriodendron (..something))
but his flowers are about 2" wide and hardly seen because its
leafes cover him most of the time.
Because this error is so wide spread it wasn't too dificult to get
me confused about it too - had to check my Sunset book
