How would you rate SD14 noise performance at iso400 and 800 vs Canon XTi. 5d ?

In the Photoreview ( http://www.photoreview.com.au/ ) review of SD14 - link posted a few days ago by somebody of this board - they rate SD14 S/Noise at 317.2 at ISO 100. Other revierws on the same site give for the Leica Digilux3 (ISO ??) S/N = 282.4, for the Samsung GX10 (=Pentax K10d) (ISO 100) S/N = 166.5 , Fuji FinePix S5 Pro (ISO 100) S/N = 246.9.

Does those numbers means something to actual SD14 users ?

Would appreciate any subjective evaluation.

Thanks

Jennla

is virtually nonexistent, IF(!) you don't underexpose.

I just printed an 8x12 at ISO 400, f/4, 1/160th and I can't see a grain of noise. The only exposure adjustment made was added contrast in SPP3. If you have to make a positive exposure compensation in SPP, you'll see color noise in the lower midtones and shadows.

Here is the picture:

I have not used an XTi before, but what I can say about what noise there is in ISO 400 and 800 images, is that it's pretty clean if the exposure is good - but you'll probably find some "grain" like effect, even though sharpness is still good. I am pretty sure the XTi would be smoother at higher ISO's, what I am not sure of is if it would offer more detail at higher ISO's...

You can find some examples of my higher ISO shots here:

Kendall, I was walking around Vegas Friday night, March 9th. I just returned from my backpacking trip around south Utah and we were killing time before an early morning plane departure. While we were walking the strip, I could have sworn I saw a guy with a tripod and a Sigma camera taking night photos. I wonder if that guy was any of the regulars on this forum... I think at the time (exhausted), I forgot that PMA was going on in Vegas at the time. It is funny how I just now put two and two together...

Love the web sites! Is it just me but don't the Sd9 images look better and have more color intensity than the SD10? Reminds me of old Velvia 50. I just bought an SD10 and am wondering if I can somehow get the same degree of color intensity as the SD9.

I'm pretty sure it was someone from here - Rick Decker and a few other people were out, either Thursday or Friday or both. I myself was out shooting Wednesday night right after dinner, but never did get back to the strip after that day... too worn out from a pre-trip to Death Valley!

The blues especaily from the SD-9 are more pronounced, but I think they are more accurate in the SD-10 and better still in the SD-14... but blue handling has always been especially nice on the SD-X series and Foveon chips in general.

Use a LP or CP for the sky or increase the saturation in SPP?

I thought "what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas"?
