Hi..

I am a serious amateur with a 5D + 24-105mm plus a bunch of other film cameras dating back to an SRT101. I currently own a Canon i900D as my only printer. I also use a Pantone Spyder 2 for monitor calibrating/profiling.

I received an email from Epson saying they were offering the R1800 refurbished for $299 which also includes free shipping. I've read this is a good printer with 8 colors and 11X14" print size; my Canon printer is 6 color with a max of 8X10 print size.

Is this a great deal or are there any other newer printers out there that offer better results at about the same or at a slightly higher cost? I am not brand loyal to Canon so Iam open to ANY manufacturer.

Thanks

The R1800 is a great printer and it prints 13x19 and up to 13x44". If you do a lot of B&W you might want to look at the R2400 instead or the HP9180.

The only problem I see with the R1800 is that it has somewhat small cartridges for printing 13x19s; but print quality is excellent.

I might have to buy myself another at that price! I highly reccomend it and I also recommend the InkSpecialist ink set I get it from MIS but i think a few places carry it, reduced my ink cost by at least 75% I just had a profile made by inkjetart and am having results equal to epson inks.

It sounded like a great deal to me: mine is sitting over at a buddy's house, waiting for me to have to run into town and get it (at his house because he owed me $300 plus, and getting delivery to a different name and address just isn't worth the hassle these days).

OK. I got mine hooked up yesterday and it did a decent job on two prints. I then prepped another print and it quit, giving me all the flashing lights it has except for roll paper. It won't print a test sheet, with or without the USB cable connected.

General error message. Yes, well...WTF is a "general error"?

So, I sent email yesterday, but I'm thinking today's a day for the phone to see what happens there.

This printer will be a good deal, IF it works properly, and IF that working starts pretty soon. Otherwise, I wasted $299.

Some ebay sellers seem to be nuts, or to think people are stupid: they are selling new R260s for around $45, plus $25-$30 shipping. That doesn't sound too bad, until you realize the UPC label is gone (they've already nailed the 20 buck rebate), and you then see the tiny line, "No Ink Is Included."

That's another $84 before you can print.

Just for the heckuva it, I checked Epson's site: with rebate and $9.95 ground UPS, the delivered total is around $90, with ink. The total on the "great" ebay deals is at least $154.

Ouch. For about $24 less, Epson will sell you an upgrade, the R360. With ink.

I asked one about the lack of ink: fairly snotty, "Well, I've sold xx of them."

Which proves one of several things: he's a liar or there are a lot of people out there who don't check prices. My bet is the latter one, which is sad.

Charlie..

You bought a factory refurbished unit or got the one back from your friend?? God knows if he dropped it etc....

If its a factory refurbished.. Epson warranties it?

Going there now is like trying to buy things on vacation. They see you as a tourist and try to rip you off. Sellers with fake accounts driving up bid prices, people getting emailed by the seller when they were the second highest bidder after the auction closed to see if they want to buy it.

People go there thinking it is "fun" to win an auction. More often the price the "won" it with is higher than a good website.

It's a factory refurb. A friend owed me some money, so he ordered it.

It is warranteed, and I'll handle it. My friend has a worse temper than I have, so he'd already be coming apart because they don't work weekends. My biggest temptation was to order a R260 just in case it takes two tries to get this one right.

I bought one of the refurbished R1800s from Epson. I ran into a few problems (first they sent the wrong printer, the next one had a defective power button) but Epson was very quick to replace each unit. They overnighted them to me and e-mailed pre-paid shipping labels. In the end, they took great care of me and I'm very happy with my R1800. (In all, they had to ship 4 units to me! It took 15 days from my order until I got the working one. It took a little patience on my part but I'm happy I toughed it out.:)

Jeez, I hope it doesn't take four units. But I am already impressed by the speed. I emailed them late Friday, IIRC. This morning, I got an email telling me who to call about returning this unit, and how to arrange for the second unit, which will be shipped before I ship this one. Hard to beat.

Yeah, it would be nice if they checked them a little more carefully before shipping them out but at least they take care of it quickly.

Good luck!

I wish they did, too, but this one printed two photos reasonably well, and then just quit, giving a "General Error," whatever that is. At first all the lights blinked. Then all but the roll film light blinked.

Sigh. Let's try "roll paper" instead of "roll film".

I did not get the R1800 but I got a similar deal on the R2400. I got a refurbished unit from Epson for $500, shipping incl. I ordered and received it very promptly. The printer looked brand new and with new, sealed ink carts. No issues with different 'born-on' dates. I think there was a poster on this site about inks from different lots. Anyways, the printer is fabulous. Especially, after making sure all your profiles are correctly plugged in, the quality of the prints are wonderful. The advanced BW mode is also very much plug'n'play. I am sure as I get pickier in the future, I might want to try some customer profiles and perhaps 3rd party inks. I did not need to make any custom profiles, but then again I am using all Epson media and ink.
