Today, I received my Olympus Gold Warranty which covers my UZi for a second and third year. It was pricey, but I thought it was a good idea considering the threat of SDS as I do love this camera. Including shipping, it was $169. They sent the warranty card in a box stuffed with popcorn by UPS istead of mailing it in an envelope. I ordered it from the Olympus site. Juli, Thanks for posting that you received you Olympus warranty. We too are think of getting one from Olympus for the same reasons you mention. I just didn't want a hassle in the event that it was needed. George

In general, I think extended warranties are for suckers!

Oh yeah... I bought mine for $80 from B&H last June. All it took was SDS to convince me I needed one for my UZI. Olympus was charging $235 to repair SDS on a camera that wasn't under warranty.

At that time, I wrote to Olympus and they told me that buying the warranty from an authorized Olympus dealer was okay, even if I didn't buy the camera from the same place.

I read on another site that Olympus no longer allows this. I don't know what the rules are now, but personally, I'd get something in writing from Olympus before I bought a gold warranty now.

In this case I don't think I'm a sucker. I think I made a wise investment. If my camera needs warranty service ONCE in the two additional years, I will have made a 200% profit on my investment. Two things, I couldn't find the ecost warranty for the 2100, other Olys but not that one.

I normally don't buy extended warranties at all. Here is a little tale of one where I did and it equates with digicams easily. I just had my Compaq laptop in repair because it started having pixels drop out (sound familar?). I had a BestBuy three year warranty. I am sure glad that I did. It cost me about $200 orginally. They replaced the monitor, cost: $1300. It didn't cost me another penny. I typically look and see what it is going to cost to replace the most fragile thing on something that I buy. If it is a whopper, like a laptop screen, it gets extra protection.

Please check your credit cards. Some of them may have this feature.

When the CC doubles your warranty, that means if something happens with your camera and required repair after the mfg warranty expires, the CC will reimburse the costs. Just make sure you use the same cc when repairing it. I've read someone did this before.

The other good thing (to some) is that if your camera is stolen, broken, etc within 90 days, the cc company will refund your money. This is the case with Amex Blue and Citibank Platinum.

Hey Juli,

I just hate that you spent so much money on the gold warranty..I had provided you with this link a long time ago. I bought mine from here and it is the same identical waranty. (I checked before I bought it) Olympus always charges more for everything. When they had B-300 they were over 300.00. When you could get it for about 130.00 elsewhere...B and H also has the same warranty for about the same price. It's not neccessay to spend this extra money if you don't have to. If it were me I would send it back to Oly and save myself about 70.00.

But to each his own..I can't afford to waste money like that.. with this hobby a savings is greatly appreciated..plus there's to much other stuff to buy.

Many credit cards do have the doubling feature. In addition, you can buy an extended warranty from some credit card companies if you purchased the item with that card. I did this through a VISA card for my camcorder. I don't remember the exact cost of the warranty but I thought it was a good deal compared to what Circuit City wanted to charge me. If anyone is considering an extended warranty you might want to check with your credit card company and see if one can be purchased directly from them.

As long as I can send my camera to OLYMPUS for repair during the doubled warranty period, and the credit card company will reimburse me the full cost, that is good enough.

I don't want someone else to work on the camera.

I couldn't believe it either. But form the sound of her post and a little checking the warranty is 169.00 at the Oly emporium. Such a waste of money....I guess this is what bothers me. She just gave Olympus an extra 70.00 or so for absolutely nothing. A shame...she could have just sent the money to me, I could have used it....lol..Hopefully she'll reconsider and send it back...She could just put it in an envelope, insure it and sent it back by US mail.

Excellent point, w3. Not only will the credit card company cover your UZi/E100, it will double the manufacturer's warranty up to ONE year on any merchandise purchased with the card. If the original warranty is 90 days, then the second 90 days is covered automatically by the credit card company; one year becomes two years. You can also buy an extended warranty for ONE year from anyone and the total warranty period becomes THREE years. However, it you purchase an extended warranty for TWO years, then the credit card extension drops off, no coverage, i.e. the maximum warranty period is three years. Also, if the original manufacturer's warranty is greater than one year, no credit card extension applies.

If a repair is necessary under the extended warranty, the product is repaired just as it would have been under the original warranty, only you pay for the repair and are then reimbursed by the credit card company.

Whew... I am not a lawyer, nor do I play one on t.v. Just trying to be helpful.
