Why Do Pros Cover L lenses in Black Tape?

I often see shooters who use gaffers tape to secure the lens hood,
but I never see anyone taping up the entire lens.
what is the difference between gaffers tape and black electrical tape? i'm thinking of disguising the canon logo on my camera.

Gaffers tape is made to be removeable. Electrical tape will leave residue behind.

I use Red gaffer tape on my large lens as in the picture for the same reason. It sticks out so far it warns people so they don't walk into it as I'm shooting

It is an interesting thread. I just added a realtree lenscoat to my wish list for my 100-400 II. I didn't know those things existed.

I use one (different brand), but it gets in the way a bit. The rearmost piece interferes too much with operation so I've taken it off. The large piece which covers the zoom ring plus some barrel prevents the hood being reversed onto the lens - I'm still using it though.
