D40 import model?

Check the companies reseller rating at
resellerrating.com

They have a very poor track record of bait and switch.

it's the best price i've found online for the D40, but should i be
worried about the fact that it says "import model"?
Only if you want warranty from Nikon. Warranty will be from the reseller and given the current track record at resellerratings.com, I wouldn't save a few bucks for potential headache down the line should anything happen.

Improving, one shot at a time...

The D40 is sold in a kit only from Nikon USA. The only way to buy a only a body in the US is to buy an import and there is no difference in the camera itself. Camera Addict is selling these on ebay and they have a good sellers rating so I don't think I would be too concerned buying this camera body from them.

thanks for the quick response.

one other thing i noticed is that they're not giving me the newer "II" version of the lens that usually comes with the D40...

any recommendations for an alternative site to buy from?

That rating info doesn't match the resellerratings.com comments! I would steer clear of them. Makes you wonder about eBAY's rating system!

Maybe it's just me, but doesn't $299 for a 512 Mb SD chip seem a little high?

They can not give away everything........

Can't give away everything? Considering you can buy a quality 1Gb SD card from newegg.com for just over $20, I'd hardly call $299 as almost giving it away.

Perhaps you were being sarcastic. :)

As far as body only for $480, I'm amazed the steps people take to save $80 when you could buy the kit from a reputable reseller that includes a US warranty and a good lens.

just brought home my first dSLR :]

bought a nikon D40 with kit lens at the beach camera store for $608 (includes tax) with USA 1 year warranty.

all i can say is this this is one incredible piece of equipment.. nikon's build quality and attention to detail is top notch, especially compared to it's competition IMHO.

now i just have to:

1) figure out what memory card to buy (ultra II or extreme III?) and where to buy it (using a standard 1gb now)
2) perhaps look at some nice bags
3) think it over if i need to get the extended warranty for an extra $90
4) start reading some quality photography books and guides
5) figure out what the hell there is to shoot in new jersey
6) plan a trip to nyc

He meant since they give away the camera they want to make it up on the accessories.

...on your decision. I'm sure you can share with us some shots of the snow there in the Garden State.

And with $299 for 512Mb SD card they will have a nice margin :-)
A 1Gb Kingston SD card costs about $14 nowadays (Mediamarkt, Netherlands).

Regarding the kit lens, the lens and the camera are in the same box. Unless they actually take out the original lens, you should normally get a Mk. II version. I have seen it in other stores too, that they just copy the details of the old version of the lens and (unintentional) forget to add the Mk II.

Do not waste money on Sandisk....go to Newegg and get a ridata or transcend.

Gratz Roman!

I'm sure you'll love the camera. Go to newegg.com and buy a decent 2gb SD card. There is a difference in terms of performance so I wouldn't necessarily go with the cheapest. For a few dollars more you can often get cards that are 3 times as fast as the cheap one.

The standard speed cards seem to work fine. I don't think you will see a big difference in the D40, as its continuous speed is not that fast. I don't know how much you will notice when moving the files to the PC. I like to use 1 or 2 Gig cards & haven't been tempted to go higher. All your eggs in one basket sort of thing. Enjoy the camera, you will find tons of things it can do well.

First, congrats on your new rig!

You have a one year warranty with Nikon USA, and most people forego any additional coverage. For one thing, third-party warranties are of dubious value, and getting repairs with them is iffy at best.

Get youself a Nikon speedlight or a telephoto zoom rather than the warranty.
