Hi,

Can anyone tell me a way to convert Photodeluxe PDD files to JPEG files? I am looking for a free program to do this. I have Photoshop 7, and XnVIEW, but I do not know if these programs do this, and if they do, I do not know how to use these programs for this purpose.

I had Photoshop Elements 2, which converted PDD to JPEG very nicely, but my computer crashed, and although I had the CD for it, I hadn't saved the serial number. The CD was 'bundled with something else that I purchased a few years ago, and I lost the serial number. I also did not register it. Adobe can not help, me. Can anyone help me? Thank you, Regards. Ken.

PDD files are a variant of PSD files. PS 7 should be able to handle the conversion. You should also be able to do it using the free Irfanview utility ( http://www.irfanview.com/ ). The current version of Irfanview doesn't explicitly mention PDD but older versions did, and I believe the current version still recognizes the file type. Try it.

This can be done with PS7. It requires:
  • An "action" in which you "record" steps you want to repeat
  • Invocation of the File > Automate > Batch command, which will automatically
apply the action to a folder of images one after another

Here's how:
  • In PS open any .pdd file
  • Be sure the Actions Palette is visible (Window > Actions or press F9)
  • From the Actions Palette menu choose New Set...
  • Assign a name to the set, e.g., "Format conversions"
  • From the Actions Palette menu this time choose "New Action..."
  • Assign a name, e.g., "Convert to .jpg", and then click "Record"
  • From the File menu choose Save as...
.....choose .jpg from the file type dropdown menu
.....Do NOT change the file name
.....Specify any folder you like at this point. Desktop is fine.
.....Click Save
.....In the .jpg options dialog, specify compression setting value [your call]
.....Click OK to close the dialog and save the file in .jpg format
  • File > Close
At the bottom of the Actions Palette click the Square button to stop the recording process
Preparation for batch processing:
Be sure your .pdd images are in a folder. For this discusssion, let's assume the name of the folder is \source, but it can be named anything

If you haven't yet, create (or identify) a folder where the .jpg files will be saved. For this discusssion, let's assume the name of the folder is \destination, but it can be named anything. Important: Not required, but it's generally a good idea for \source and \destination to be DIFFERENT folders to eliminate the possibility of inadvertantly hosing the original files.
Invoking the batch command
  • Click on the name of the action just recorded, "Convert to .jpg"
  • File > Automate > Batch
Play:
...Set = Format conversions
...Action = Convert to .jpg

Source:
...Folder, Choose (navigate to \source)
...(x) Suppress color profile warnings

Destination:
...Folder, Choose (navigate to \destination)
...(x) Override action "save as" commands [trust me on this]

Click OK...and off you should go.

Hope this helps.

Thank you very much., Danny. I tried your suggestion and it works!. I did not get just right yet, but your method will work with a little practice on my part. If you could give me a little more information as to converting whole files, that may be of additional help. Thanks again for all of your kindness, Regards, Ken.

Ken:

Glad you made a little progress.
re: If you could give me a little more information as to converting whole files
I don't know what you mean by "whole files." Please elaborate or rephrase.

I'm also confused by this. Did you mean whole folders? The procedure Danny gave you is how you would do it in PS 7 and does the whole folder.

If you try Irfanview, that also has a batch facility. Under the File menu, select Batch Conversion/Rename. Then select the folder containing the files and either click "add all" or select the individual files you want and click "add". Select your output directory, indicate a batch conversion, set jpeg compression under options, and press "start" to convert.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the response. Yes I did mean FOLDERS not individual photos, sorry I did not make that clear.

Between you and Danny, I now have the correct information and have been successful in accomplishing this. Thanks to both of you and others who have helped me on this, Regards, Ken.
