Sadly, coming from the UK, those prices don't seem all that bad. :'( Granted though, there are much cheaper lenses. :)

To give you an idea, I couldn't find the 300mm but the same 77 is £699 new here with no rebate available (US $1,370). Darn it, us brits don't half keep moaning about how much we pay! :)

Best,
Tim

Currently waiting for my MF Nik0n gear to sell, then hope to buy the KtenD. I've never owned a DSLR in my life, so I'm probably the last person you want to trust here!

Hmmm.

For the $1800 that F*300 f4.5 went for, you could get both a New Canon 300 f4L IS and XTI body to go with it.

Yep, had both on my watch list, but the 77 wasn't any deal and the 300 @ 4.5 would be abit short for birding in alot of cases and adding a converter would make it slow and dark, so I'll keep saving for a Bigma and still have money left over for a new 77 compared to the 300.
Wish I was making money at this to justify the LBA (+:

Well, I have the F*300, and believe me the quality is FAR superior to the Sigma BigMa ! You can (and I do almost exclusively) shoot the F*300 wide open @ F/4.5, but with BigMa at 500mm, to get anything sharp you need at least F/8. Secondly even with my Tamron1.4x+F*300 i get MUCH better images than the BigMa at 500mm. However, BigMa is a perfect Zoo lens on a sunny day.

Beautiful images Sam, no question, but I think I can live with the quality I've seen, at the distances they where shot at, with the bigma. I have a Tokina 400mm F5.6 now and a 1.4X Tamron and 1.7X Pentax converter and your right, I need light, which at dusk or sunrise is just not there. If I was going to fork out that kind of money, I think I'd just spend the extra and try to get a F2.8 and be done with it.

Guess I'll just enjoy what I can afford and learn to do the best I can with it. (+:

yes, indeed ;-)

From what I know now, and the way I use mine... I think this lens is a bargain even at $1,500 !

But, I bet a mint one will push the $2,500 range soon. And, I don't think it's that good ;-) As someone mentioned, you can get a C** D400 plus a 400L for that kind of money.
