I just got an FZ30 today, a great deal too. I guess with the FZ50 out this camera isn't in as much demand. Still seems like a great camera, reminds me of the film SLR that's sitting in my closet. I've looked through EVF's of other digicams but this is the first one that pleases me. The manual zoom ring is a relief, those little zoom sliders and buttons that I've typically seen are not fun to use. I see this has a manual focus ring too, cool. I hope the sun is out tomorrow so I can take some pictures, because I can tell this camera's going to be loads of fun to use.

Congrats. From my searching, it appears deals on new ones are rare. Before I recently bought my FZ30 used, I found a new one in a Wolf camera store. They still wanted $549 for it. I tried to dicker, with the "move out the old stock" type of logic. But, they said they had no local control over the prices. I imagined that an independent just might have made me a deal, and was a little sick to walk out emptyhanded.

That already is $150 off of the original retail price of the FZ30, so that is a good price from a brick and mortor store.

People think that just because a new model comes out the the price should drop substancially.

But why should they?

They are just as good of a camera even if a newer model is out.

Enjoy your FZ30's . . . and don't believe all the whooeey you will see strewn all about these forums about them!

They are excellent cameras . . . probably worth much more than they are (and have been) selling for!

Original price mattered not. I know I could have gotten an FZ50 for less on the web, and had been considering doing just that. But, I DO realize that the store will may eventually get the $549 for it... They just have to look at the time value of money and decide where their priorities are. If they had had an FZ50 sitting there, they might have made more sales to Joe Consumer.

I've been reading this forum for years, since I have an FZ1v2, which will now have to be Ebay'd. No other bridge/ultrazoom was in serious contention.

elmo - I wouldn't be too quick about selling the FZ1 on ebay. They bring anywheres between $50 to $80. The FZ1 was probably one of the best Panny FZ models made. Forget that it is only 2 MP. The images it took look as good as my FZ5 and 30. Sometimes I think they even look better. I had two FZ1v2s that I gave to my son and son-in law when I got the FZ5. They both love the cameras. I sure wish that I had at least one of them back. If you do get another camera , I suggest you keep the FZ1 as a great backup, or as a second camera set on different parameters (it is not too large).

--Completely agree with elmo,

I bought one of those used FZ1's for $75 and it's been a great camera. Still works flawlessly and takes great pictures. Lightning fast burst mode and great IR photos too. Hard to beat for $75, so you might consider keeping it for a backup camera. Who knows...someday the FZ30 may be sold and you can use the FZ1 until you get your new camera.

Congrats on the new acquisition. The FZ30 is a great value for a bridge camera and I'm sure you'll find good use for it. Post some pictures and tell us what you think of the camera.

In the spirit of Occam’s Razor one should embrace the less complicated formulation or simply put, less is more.

Congrats- you will have a lot of fun with it. The handling is superior (as you are finding out), and is capable of a lot of great photographs with some practice. Start shooting and post some pictures.
