Body Parts

We've all got them!

For this challenge, let's focus on body parts. Your body parts, or the body parts of those around you. (Humans only please!) The idea in this challenge is to take photos of body parts, not photos that just happen to have body parts in them. So portraits and the like will not be accepted unless it is clear - through use of DOF or lighting or other wonderful photog tricks - that there is one body part that is definitively the focus of the shot. And guys, no shots of a bunch of people with the claim that there are lots of body parts. That won't quite fly. The focus should be on the body parts themselves.

Just so you have a better idea of whether your shot is on topic, count the main body parts you see. If there are more than three it's too much. Let's say I take a picture that has a hand, an eye and a nose in it. That's on topic - 3 body parts. Now let's say I take a picture with two legs, two arms and a belly button in it. That's off topic - 5 body parts (though I'm sure it would be a nice shot).

Also, the body parts can come from more than one person. So two hands, each from a differnt person is fine - 2 body parts.

You should also know that I am not offended by the sight of the human body, but if you are, you may want to forego this challenge and wait until the next. As far as I am concerned we are all adults here and so anything goes!

wtg on setting up the galleries! I like the new topic and already have 3 pics in mind for eligible. I'll be happy if I even get one in these days. But just having influx of ideas is fun.

Time to get the 50 1.4 out :)

It's all about light, my friend.

:)

Didn't you shoot a really cool shot of one of your neices getting a grape with that lens and it's super short DOF? I remember that being a really nice shot.

I look foward to what you do with it this time!

Yeah, that pic made me think of the 50 1.4.

I bet we will see a lot of shallow DOF type photos in this challenge :)

Good work, Christina! Both on choosing a topic and on setting up the galleries. I like your header shots quite a lot. I am looking forward to many and various body parts! Sharon

Lots of shooting possibilities with one, well done.

Though I did have a bit of a shock to see so many portrait type shots posted already.............I think two of em were on topic:-)
Regards Rod

This should be another fun challenge...with some beautiful and interesting images. :)

Some taken early at photography and some recent. Please comment on what you like and what you do not. Jano

I used to subscribe to the idea of "let the voters decide" when it comes to judging what's on/off topic entries. But after seeing what Jano did in this past challenge I'm not sure anymore, and undecided really.

So what do you guys think of the host deciding, and putting in pending, off topic photos. If enough people support it maybe we should write that in the rules, at least to save the host an awkward position he/she might be in.

What do you guys think

IMHO I think it should be up to the host to decide how much policing of the topic they want to do.

That's a third and a good option.

I am willing to let the host decide what is off-topic, and to move such items to “Pending.” Some type of courtesy notification might be in order, as in an announcement in the challenge thread.

But I have wondered, for the year or so that I’ve participated in this type of challenge, what the basis should be for a voter’s choice. I see two possibilities, and I wonder how others feel about it.

Concept 1: Take all of the entries, and discard those that are “off topic.” All those remaining are therefore “on topic.” From that point, forget the nature of the topic, and vote for the “best” of the images that remain. By “best,” I mean your notion of best composition, best presentation of focus versus blur, best colors or use of monochrome, best lighting, most interesting subject matter, whatever.

Concept 2: Vote for the images that best represent the topic, even if they do not represent the best of photographic composition and editing.

For my part, I have voted for images that best represent the topic, in preference to other images that might better display the photographer’s technical abilities.

One does not achieve success by being at the right place at the right time, but rather by being ready when the right place and time present themselves for your inspection.

For me I'm a "Concept 2" guy, as long as the entry is on topic. I go by the overall feeling/impression of a photo, I couldn't care less if it follows any rules or such.
