G7 Preflash?

I just ordered a Canon G7, and I'm wondering if it has that annoying little preflash that I had on my A520. This is not a red-eye reduction, if I'm not mistaken--it has something to do with white balance, I think. Anyway, I can never get a good flash picture of my cats (or some people) becase this flash causes them to squint right before the shutter snaps.

Does the G7 internal flash do this? If so, is there an easy way to get around it? Thanks!

You have a red-eye redux function, or you hit the metering button, and it sent out a metering flash to figure out what the right flash strength is. Red-eye redux uses the green light. Metering uses the flash. I'm not sure what irks you, but you can turn off redeye redux, and you can choose to not meter your flash.

??

Generally speaking...redeye redux makes people squint. The purpose of redeye redux is to close the subject's iris.

...the G7 does have that quick little preflash, but I can turn it off? I was told that the feature on my A520 was for white balance, not redeye reduction. (It's a really quick flash that occurs what seems like a millisecond before the actual flash.) I understand how redeye reduction works, and it is a great function to have at times, but I'm hoping that if the G7 has this feature (whether it's for redeye or white balance), it's easy to turn off.

Thanks for your reply!

The pre-flash is for the E-TTL flash metering. It is an automated metering system to determine the strength of the flash.

I don't know if you can tun it off on the G7, however, you can use flash exposure lock (FEL) to perform the preflash at any point before you actually shoot the picture, which will allow your subject to react to the pre-flash, then, return to normal for you to take the picture a moment or so later.

On G7 and flash, you might be interested in the added shutter lag that using flash has. It was a widely discussed topic about a month ago on this forum. It's believed to be because of the E-TTL flash metering, but some say differently. Here's just one thread on the topic.

...and had to set up a new account today, hence the two screennames. Is there any way to delete one of the user accounts? Thanks, and sorry for the hassle!)
