New free RAW converter that works well!

Thanks for the link, it is really nice software. It's slow but I can live with it, considering it's free.

I really can't use Pentax software in any of my computers beacause the moving and updating windows is so slow. I have no idea what's wrong but both PhotoBrowser and PhotoLab have bad redraw problems, resulting in choppy picture updates which drives me mad. Besides I find RT interface more usable. Thanks again for sharing the link.

I have the same problem using the pentax software in the standard way: when opening photo laboratory from photo browser the PC hangs up and/or becomes incredably slow.

When opening a document with photo laboratory the thumbnails are not displayed as pictures - quite stupid.

So I work as following: I create 'thumbnails' from the raw files by starting photo laboratory, select all raw files and batch process them all in lowest quality. Then by the normal windows browser I can find the picture I want to proces, right-click the corresponding raw file and select 'open with'.
Even then now and then the PC hangs up when saving the file (at 99%).
Apart from this I really like the software.

Do you also have problem with moving window which contains opened PEF-file? It's incredibly choppy for me. Not that I'd do that often but still. I can't understand why, both my main comp and laptop are dualcore and both have decent video cards and only application that has such problems is Pentax software.

Btw, Picasa also supports PEF-files just fine. You can't set anything by parameters but for visual tweaking it's just fine. You still get to keep the PEF's and export to JPG. I've been using it for quick tweaking of casual pics (birthdays, walkarounds etc), works fine if I need to do just few adjustments.

But I'm going to try Raw Therapee for a while now.

Yes, it's slow and choppy; probably because all the calculations are done again and again from the beginning on, like the software discussed in this thread does at well. Thanks for the picasa advice.

You are very welcome! Like you, I am very pleased with this software. The more I use Rawtherapee the more intrigued I am by it. Others have noted that its speed is reduced by the fact it does all its calculations and actions over an over again each time an adjustment is made...I suspect that Mr. Horvath will find a way to have these actions done just once so that a new adjustment requires just that one action...this will speed things up quite a bit. But for now I am in no hurry anyway so I will continue to use Rawtherapee. Please post any commentaries as you get to know this software better and so will I.

Best regards

One question--I'm a K100D new user and wonder why or how this
program would be better than the one that came with the camera. I
hate to go through the RAW learning curve twice. :-)
If you ever break the shackles tying you to MS Windows you will appreciate that there programs out there like this that run on Linux.

Regarding the K10d kit software. It hangs on my machine as well. It hangs 100% of times when I use lupe in PEF converter. I do not think this software was untested to leave such bugs. My hypothesis is it hangs/glitches when it runs out of memory. I have 256MB RAM. Has anybody had good experience with it on 256MB machine?

Somewhere on these forums, I came across a reference to a free RAW
converter called Rawtherapee...thank you to whoever that was ! I
know, I know! The name threw me at first but I went to the website
at http://www.rawtherapee.com/ and downloaded the free programme.
It will convert PEF's at least for the K100 and also DNG's. It
seems to be a thorough and very useful software so far. Others who
are more technically advanced than I might like to look at it...I
am relatively new to digital photo editors and converters. I intend
to give it a good try since I shoot in DNG's all the time. Oh and
yes it will edit TIFF's and JPEG's too and quite well. See what you
think. I think I love it! Many thanks again to the person who
posted it somewhere hours ago but a quick look and I can't seem to
find you. Maybe you will see this post.

All the best
