While playing with my 580ex, (with 30D and 24-70L ) I noticed the flash is stuck in the 14MM zoom range when I select ETTL. in other words I get this display

ETTL M Zoom MM

I thought the zoom should work with the lens and it zooms up and down the 24-70 range...

Also how do I set the flash back to default settings?

You're zoom is on manual. press zoom and then use the dial (turn it until you don't see M anymore.

Everybody has photographic memory, some don't don't have film.

I tried that still would not zoom correctly.........but then I re read the manual and I discovered if the wide screen/filter is down it will stay in the MM zoom range......

Just proves that you should always read the manual first

I just overcame this frustrating and confusing situation.

You are using the flash's diffuser and it automatically locks you into the 14mm wide angle mode when it's extended.

Gently push the difusser into the flash housing until it clicks and this should solve your problem.

I used the word gently because I have read where people have damaged the sensor switch in the flash and needed to have it repaired.

Good luck!

After reading your post I realized my flash wasn't displaying the focal length of the lens. I had thought the flash wasn't acting quite right. I adjusted and what a difference. Need to make sure it is set correctly. Not sure how it got that way. Thanks.
