My wife would like a good camera for taking pictures at my daughter's soccer and basketball games (both indoor and outdoor). We are currently using a Canon S400, which is limited by it's 3x Optical Zoom. The Canon has been a great camera for it's intended purpose, but it's not what we're looking for regarding the sporting event shots. Can anyone share any personal experience of using the FZ50 for this purpose? By the way, she likes to capture occasional video clips as well. Any help would be much appreciated.

Indoor, or outdoor under the lights, is tough for any camera. I shoot my daughter's soccer games at night with an FZ-50. ISO 800 and f/3.2 typically allow 1/80 shutter speeds at best. Lots of shots get erased, and the rest typically need some post processing. I've adapted to the limitations, but it takes time.

DSLR would be better but costs more.

No easy answer here!

If an external flash is allowed at the basketball games, then the FZ50 would be an acceptable choice. (I'm assuming that your gyms are lit similar to the ones that I have been in.)
