Ground Zero & Battery Park - which lenses?

Statue of Liberty.
Are you planning to shot birds there with 100-400? What are you
planning to shot in Ground Zero & park with such long telephoto
lens?

Interesting that he first asking for suggestion, than totally
ignoring it....

And you remind me of my old man, who got upset when I wouldn't take his advice all the time. Several posters mentioned take the 100-400. With you it is it heads you win, tails I lose. Advice is just that. If everyone said 70-200, and leave the 100-400 home, that's one thing. I've only been to NYC once since 1964, and that was three weeks ago to see Jersey Boys. This trip to the Big Apple was decided on two days ago.

Ok, it is fine for statue but what about Ground Zero? You need wide angle lens (10-22 for example), 100-400 good for birds and very small details. With 100-400 you might shoot small stones there .... :))

70-200 might be better as telephoto there. Beside you could take boat to statue and make very nice wide angle shots close to statue.

One last question, will the 17-55/2.8 IS be helpful on the Staten Island Ferry on the way back to NYC at dusk, or would I be better off using my 35/1.4 L instead? I'm making this an all day affair.

Obviously, your photo ops will be much better if you take the ferry to the Statue. I realize you are time-constrained.

If you don't plan on the ferry, might you have time to visit South Street Seaport? I've always found that a great place to shoot for an hour or so. Wall Street & the NYSE are also near there.

I'll see how the ferry to the Statue of Liberty goes. I'll skip going to China Town for lunch, if I can get to the Statue of Liberty with my roll about camera bag.

To me, taking a roll about bag is going to be a PIA in NYC.

How many lenses do you plan to take?

Are you planning to take a tripod?

Do you plan to take photojournalistic types of shots or more static shoots?

Kind Regards and Happy New Year.

Whatever comes to mind. Going beddy bye now. Got a long day tomorrow.

No problem with the rolling backpack. A very common sight in NYC. Lots of folks use them. Enjoy your visit!!
