Hi --

I did a search on the search engine and no one seemed to cover this yet... so...

Has anyone updated their G2's firmware and use Linux? I noticed on the website where you can download the new firmware that there were two updates available -- one for Windows users and one for Mac users. Does anyone know if one of these will work for Linux users?

Thanks,
Connie

Hi Conny,

It 'll only work if you have a cf-card reader in your pc and if you copy the file PS110.FIR from the firmwareupdate to your Compact Flash.
Then put the CF-card in your G2 and select firmware update from the menu.

The firmware update has absolutely nothing to do with OS. The only thing it does is present text messages walking you through how to connect your USB cable to your camera, and at the end it transfers the physical firmware file to your camera. You shouldn't even have the cable connected when you actually update the firmware - that's all done in-camera.

Your best bet with Linux is to use a cardreader and copy the firmware file onto the compactflash manually. The Canon instructions are quite detailed as to how this is done :)

Thnaks for the replies.

I don't have a card reader. Would it still be possible for me to do this upgrade without it?

Or should I go looking for a friend with a Windows machine and/or card reader?

Thanks,
Connie

Have a look at gphoto2 ( http://www.gphoto.net ). Maybe you can use that to upload to the CF in the camera using the usb cable (but I doubt it actually).
Better is to look for a windows pc somewhere.
