RE 50mm Primes

Unless the K10D is different than the K100D, my AE-L button sets
the shutter speed on in manual mode. It works quite well.
Same for the DL, hit the AE-L button and it stops down to the manual setting on the lens and the camera sets the shutter speed.

Pretty neat!

Those look like some steals - how is that 100-300 F lens?

Looks like it could be an interesting lens. I already have the 50-200, so does this lens perform well in the 200 to 300 range? Or would I be wise to get a teleconverter instead? Also thanks for the info regarding the calculations - simple enough :)

It seems no-one has any experience with the Pentax 2x tele-converter that fits the 18-55 and 50-200. I see the Tamron 1.4X recommended here a lot - the 2x converter is going to make my lens slow though! Only good in daylight basically. The 1.4X will do a little better but the 100-300 seems like the best one as far as speed goes. Hmm, I wonder what would be best to get more reach - 200 is already good for me but 300mm should be enough but 400 would be pretty sweet I admit.

Yesterday I saw an old M-400mm - f5.6 prime on the bay - looked huge - but I wonder how much that thing will go for :)

BTW- the A-50mm 1.7 is a great find - there are like two or three of these on ebay right now and they are at around $100 and the auctions are not over! I think this is the K10 demand lens price increase syndrome maybe :)
Ah, I miss the good old days of Pentax lens hunting on eBay
(earlier this year!)
Here are my eBay "trophies" :
Pentax SMC-A 50mm f/1.7 - $35
Pentax SMC-F 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 - $49
Pentax SMC-A 28mm f/2.8 - $49
Sigma DL 70-300mm f/4-5.6 - $24
Vivitar Series 1 Auto-focus 28-210mm f/4.5-6.7 - $15 (great sharp
lens, but SLOW!)
Sears Auto-aperture 135mm f/2.8 - $12!
Tamron 2x teleconverter - $15

Regarding the aperture changing with teleconverters - Think about
what aperture is a measure of - Focal length/diameter of front
element

A teleconverter increases the focal length (by 1.4 or 2), but does
the front element get bigger?
So take my 300mm lenses, which are f/5.6 = 300/5.6 = 53mm front
element diameter

Stick a 2x teleconverter on it, the focal length becomes 600mm, but
the front element is still 53mm. So your aperture is actually 600/a
= 53mm. Solving for a gives us 11. This is a TWO-stop difference
from 5.6 and fairly slow. I'll leave the exercise to you to figure
out
1)the new aperture when using a 1.4 converter
2)How many stops do you lose when using the 1.4.

Math is fun!

Enjoy your new lens!

Apparantly its not the M but A 400mm, this is tempting me a lot - seller says it is in great condition!

Ah, I miss the good old days of Pentax lens hunting on eBay
Pentax SMC-F 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 - $49
Hmm, I see 1 or 2 FA 100-300 lenses on ebay - one in mint condition and one in good condition but with a couple specs in it - I already have some specs of lint or something inside my DA50-200 and they dont show up in the pics at all - Im thinking that shouldnt be a problem and probably not worth getting the lens cleaned just yet - how much do lens cleaning services average for? Would appreciate it if anyone knows it by any chance just for information for when I do need to get them cleaned - I am sure almost everyones lenses have some tiny spots of lint (I think this is coming from the camera bag actually), dust or something similar stuck inside right?

Thanks again and sorry for so many questions but this thread is really helping me come to terms with older Pentax glass as well :)

It's pretty decent, not the best at auto-focusing indoors, but in good light it does ok.

Here's one at 240mm, f/5.6, 1/800s, ISO-1600.

I like "shooting" squirrels in our local park, they usually don't like to pose for me, but once in awhile I get lucky!

Don't discount the f/2 simply because there are so many on EBay. The f/2 was the primary "kit" lens sold with most Pentax K1000 cameras which were in production for over 20 years. There's a huge supply of these lenses out there, but that doesn't mean they're bad.

The f/1.4 used to go for similar prices a couple of years ago ($25-$50), but it's reputation on the web, and sales of Pentax DSLRs, have bumped its price up quite a bit.

Thats some good information - nice to know, still I really wanted an f1.4 or at least 1.7 prime and so I think the 1.4 will do good for me, the f2 would only offer me 2 stop advantage over my sigma 18-50 f2.8 macro whereas the f1.4 will give me 2 stops - great for low light. Also I like the focal lenght as its equivalent to 75mm and excellent for portraits. With my 50-200 I have to stop down to f5.6 or more - at f7.1 and f8 the 50-200 is very sharp though, with the 18-50 f2.8 - I dont know since Adorama hasnt shipped it yet as they havent got their hands on any yet, with this I am sure I will love the DOF I will get at aperture larger than f2.8 for portraits! I hope its decently sharp at f1.4 and good at f2 and f2.8 and quite excellent at f4 - that would make me happy.

Seems I caught ebay fever today :)
LOL - me too :)

Since getting my K100D a couple weeks ago I have also caught this fever. I've only bought one extra lens so far though... an RMC Tokina 135mm f2.8 prime (K mount) for the princely sum of A$4.25 plus delivery. Another poster here told me it's a good lens so I'm looking forward to receiving it today.

Now I'm looking at 50mm primes, like you were. I also want a f1.4 or 1.7, for extra speed (compared to the f2.8-f4.5 of my Sigma 17-70) and sharpness. Though I'm not really sure how much extra sharpness I'll notice. It will be worth it anyway just for the speed, and the ability to get creative with shallow DOF.

It would be nice to get an A lens, but I'm not sure I can justify the extra $. So I am considering the older screw mount Takumar 50s as well as K mount M/A.

Kelly, thanks for posting as well. Good to hear that these non-A lenses work well with the K100D.

One question though - I gather that there some of M42-K adaptors have a flange which puts the lens further from the sensor than it should be, resulting in a problem focusing on infinity. Anyone had experiences either way with this? Is using an adaptor a pian in practice?

I thought using the adapters the standard way was really annoying. I bought one for each M42 lens, removed all the catch springs and they work almost exactly like K-mount lenses. A K-mount lens cap can be used as a wrench for tightening the adapter enough so it never comes loose. The lenses don't lock on and can be twisted off without using the lens release button, but I think they are stable enough. Eventually I may modify the lenses to allow them to lock.

I still think the A50/1.7 is the best value in used A50s. Think about it as price per half-stop. They sell for $40-70 (eBay US), about $20-40 over the A50/2. You can wait for a good deal. The A50/1.4s are all going for over $100 and the auctions attract lots of bidders. That half stop is about $50, but this is getting too close to the price of a new FA. The next half stop is at least $200.

Question regarding the rear caps - does the 1.4 M come with one -
or did this seller just probably loose his. Also are they standard
size as in will I be able to go in a camera store and buy a rear
cap or will I need one made specifically for this lens?
For read caps check this out:

and many more similar ones.

the Pentax M lenses are great. They have some of the best built qualities of all Pentax lenses. Welcome to the LBA territory ;-)
