If new cameras are coming out after the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January, should I wait to see what is new or go for the sd800is or the sd700is now???

I prefer the small ,convenient point and shoot cameras. My last camera was the Casio Z3, and it was great.

How soon after the Show do the cameras actually hit the stores?

Thanks

Likely in March-April or so.

The new cameras are normally announced in Feb, and my guess is they won't be available until at least March or so. Think of all the photo opportunities you will have missed by then.

Besides it seems that the technology has hit a bit of a wall in the last few years - the cameras are getting faster and sexier, but the pictures are still pretty much the same (in some cases even worse) with a couple of extra MP.

I would just by an SD700 or SD800 now. You will probably then have hundreds or thousands of photos by March. And you can sell it on Ebay in March if you want, probably only losing $100 or so, and buy the new model then.

That's what I'll probably do. :)

I tried all 3, and I preferred the SD800 over the SD900. The SD800 lens seemed a tiny bit sharper than the SD900 at ISO80, and the SD900 had terrible vignetting with the flash.

There was also no benefit from the extra MP on the SD900 (unless you print massive 20" prints of course), and as I said in fact it seemed even slightly less sharp.

They're all pretty good, I just preferred the SD800. (set at ISO80)
