a little irritable? Noteably, his post on the new compact photo sensor and the D40 rumor from Nikon.

Poor guy! It must be hard to keep up with everything in this everchanging hobby!

Good luck, Phil.

I personally am getting irratable at the photo manufacturers who continue to dumb down the point and shoot and prosumer category.

There's no reason why these cameras can't have manual exposure modes and raw output. But it seems that these "serious" features are reserved for the SLRs (and the lens/flash/accessory.... revenue they bring). To mke matters worse, they've all gone megapixel crazy since that sells these cameras. Photography has gotten steadily worse/worse. A disposable drugstore film camera with a fixed focus plastic lens is capable better pictures than some of these small digicams.

how many million users does this website have? out of the hundreds of millions im sure a good few thooudand to have made donations...lucky phil

I've been visiting this site since mid 2003. I've paid nothing and have received a tremendous amount of knowledge, in a way that was fun too. So I think Phil Askey should really be appreciated for the great job he does with this site, and I also think the man deserves every penny he makes while running his unique kind of business.

As for cameras, I do not agree with the claim that the megapixel race has no advantages. True, cramming 12MP on a tiny sensor doesn't help much on it's own. But the money it brings definitely motivates people to buy more, and therefore pushes the industry forward - technical innovation benefits put aside.

Anyone that has followed his posts on the forums knows Phil has softened up his tone quite a bit. Who can fault him about the two announcements mentioned?

your post reminded of what I saw at the drug store the other day.

In the line for the register, in the impulse-items area, right beside film and disposable cameras was a display of 256mb SD cards. Just got a chuckle out of that.

And I agree, the dumbing down of the prosumer has gone way too far.

You're probably right. It just seemed to me that those two news items had a bit of a "tone" to them. More so on the Nikon news bulletin. I got the impression Phil doesn't like to spout rumors and would rather put up a news bulletin when there is true news to publish...which is good, but hates to be left behind also. I was just indicating that it must be tough to do that when there are so many rumor mongers on the web.
