This quote I came across recently while reading "The Practical Zone System - A simple guide to photographic control" by Chris Johnson

"During a portion of a fourteen years experience as an amateur photographer, I always supposed that a good judgement, combined with experience (the latter implying the generous use of time and plates), would eventually enable me to obtain a good negative everytime I exposed a plate....That was my greatest mistake."

Bulb and Button Magazine Sept 1900

I really enjoy this quote, because no matter how hard you try, you are going to strike out quite often when taking photographs. Realizing this, you can easily get past the failures and get to the business of getting the keepers.

When all else fails, try again.

So how about you, any quotes that you have really enjoyed?

I always liked the response that Eisenstadt gave when asked how he happened to become a professional photographer. His answer (paraphrased from memory, as I no longer have the book this came from):

"I suppose I drifted into professional photography the same way a woman drifts into prostitution. First I did it to please myself, then I did it to please my friends, and, finally, I did it for the money."

Such a career path may apply to many of us, eh?

Every photograph you make is a self-portrait. Bob Llewellyn (photographer)

So much depends on one's atitude. One can shut many, many doors of receptivity in oneself; or one can open many doors that are shut.

"The photograph you take depends on who you're being when you take it." (anonymous, from a photo workshop called "photography as prayer" I took last summer).
