Hello Canon Pundits,

I've just upgraded to XP and found out - much to my dismay - that my FS 2710 isn't supported. XP is so excellent in every other respect that I really hate dropping back to my Win98 gaming partition to scan my slides/negatives.

I've heard it said that it is possible to use a Win2000 driver to get XP to talk to the CanoScan FS 2710!?!

Anybody out there have any experience with this radical proceedure? And, if so, could a fellow look forward to someone in here posting instructions?

TIA,--- Geoff

Good luck!

Many thanks "JohnM" for those links - at first I was a bit put-off by the German page, but I thought, "What the heck; I'll try out that "Translate" feature in Copernic ..." And it worked! I downloaded the ASPI software from the link I got from that link you posted - here's a shortcut to the actual page: http://www.zaratustra.de/download.html and then after "Gist-In-Time" worked its magic, I was able to decipher the tortuous English it came up with enough to figure out what to do, exactly.

So, ASPI is now installed. Now for the really weird part...

I turned on the scanner and XP found the scanner but couldn't download any drivers, so I told it to give up trying and closed the dialog boxes, rather diappointed.

Then a little box came up saying my new hardware was properly installed and ready for use !??!

In the "Device Manager" it shows up as "Other devices" ....and has no conflicts!

I decided, after a minute or two of being able to continue as usual, to install the CanoScan software. Everything went as should be, until the "Automatic Configuration Utility" ran. It reported some odd error; I didn't bother to write it down.

I tried runnning the software without it being configured properly expecting failure, and got what I expected.

Using the option "CanoCraft [non-automatic] Configuration" I was able to configure the software to see the scanner in Windows.

It works perfectly!

SO FAR!

I just took time out to tell you about it.

If any hopeless ****-ups occur, I will certainly report same.

Thanks very much for the pointers in the correct direction.

Gotta love BBS - even in HTML form.

Regards,

Glad it worked out for you, Geoff! Your comments mirror Ed Nazarko's when he got his Nikon up and running..."with my hands raised to the gods of scanning not to teach me a lesson." He says that his scanner is far more stable now.
Good luck!
