as I don't shoot long very often, I am thinking of trading in the 85/1.8 and the 135L for this lens. Whadayathink?

I wouldn't. I have a 70-200 f/4 non IS and I have the 135 f/2L. I love them both, but you would have to pry the 135 f/2L from my cold dead hands. The size of that lens and it sharpness and speed are just so tough to beat.

A few more good reviews on the 70-200 f/4L IS and I'll be looking to pick one up. This is the ticket for my skiing shots where I then will not have to figure out how to carry my monopod with me.

I have an excellent copy of the non-IS version but I WANT THIS LENS! Of course, wanting is very different than needing! I've got some saving up to do but early indications are that it will be well worth the wait.

If everyone is going to get a F/4 IS, why not save the extra few hundered and get a f/2.8 IS , since they are so close in price. It doesn't make sense to me. At least get the 70-200 2.8 Non -IS for even less than the new 70-200F/4 IS.
I think the 70-200 f/4 IS is just in the wrong price range.

The f2.8 version is nearly twice as heavy, and physically larger by 30%.

many of us would already have the 70-200 f2.8 IS if we wanted it. the new lens retails for $1250 and i'll bet you'll never see another L zoom with IS retailing for less despite what you may believe about the price.

Doesn't the f/4 have better IQ than the f/2.8? I seem to recall it having better looking MTF charts.

I went in to pick up a 70-200 2.8 IS some months back. having never used one before I was dismayed by its size and weight. Bought the 70-200 4L instead~ its super sharp in good light, perfect for zoo and parades etc. have not tried it with flash/indoors.

Two weeks ago I was tempted to order the new 70-200 4L IS but decided to buy the 70-200 2.8 IS. Been trying it out in available light~ astounded by the pleasing bokeh and quick focusing, overall extremely pleased with my choice. Somehow the size/weight seems worth it now! In fact it balances very well on my 5D. This is one versatile piece of optics. I love it. Definite keeper. Now I know why this lens is so favored by knowledgeable people like LeeJay and Joe Mama and others.

Now I should probably ebay my super sharp mint 70-200 4L I guess, and apply the proceeds toward the 16-36 L I have been eyeing!. It never ends LOL.

does it really matter ? I wouldn't trade my non IS 2.8 for it. I don't use it for a "walk all day lens". And, 2.8 is really nice to have.

on this lens but it will be a ways down the road for sure. In the meantime canon will be lining their pockets big time!! When people (like you guys :) ) want something you will find a way to get it and make that smile on Canon face get bigger. Personally, I will probably get one also at some point and time. But I will wait to see what's announced in Feb of interest and sell my non-IS version in the meantime. Gerry
