I'm ready to dump it. All I use is to rate it and select pictures for PP. It keeps crashing/freezing on me. Making a job or rating folders into a long struggle. Besides, it takes a long time to just initiate the meta data files before I can do anything.

Does anyone know a good software just for rating and then open up in PS?

Thanks for your advices.

Maybe you need more RAM?

Bridge is a fantastic program, but you need to remember how memory hungry PS and its friends are (like bridge). I have a full gig of DDR RAM devoted solely to PS and I still could use more. Optimally I think you want about 1.5 gigs just for PS.

How come no one ever looks at a Picasso and says 'Wow, he must have used a really great brush', but when they look at a great photo they say 'Wow, you must have used a really great camera'

I would have to agree. More RAM! I think Bridge is great...except for the issue of taking forever to render images to review.

That said, IView Media Pro 3 works much better (faster and easier) for the proofing process.

My laptop is 800MHz !GB Ram, but I have a 2nd 22" monitor. Maybe that takes away some of the memory? Slow is fine, but freezing and crashing is not acceptable. Is IView Media Pro more stable than Bridge?

I run 2 gig of ram and have a disk dedicated to the bridge cache. It still has to generate the cache when you open up a new set of images, but ti doesn't take very long (at least on a fast processor). Once the cache is generated, I can blaze through images as fast as I can hit my keyboard (& I'm fast). I've never had it hang or freeze on me and I've opened folders with thousands of images in it with bridge.

Other than increasing RAM as others have said you might try to erase PS/Bridge preferences. I had the same problem once of Bridge hanging all the time and someone told me to fix the preferences.

similar with my system, and decided on a couple of things after talking with another photog.

I moved all my data to another machine while I made some system changes.

I put in a new 10K Sata drive for the OS and Apps. The old drive was a 7500K AT style drive. The speed does make a difference. The machine has 2 gig of RAM as well.

I only loaded CS2 on it.
The OS is Win2K prof.
I use a 300 Gig drive for data only.
I use AVG for an antivirus. Got rid of Norton AV ;)

The machine runs like a breeze. I only use this machine to edit images and check email and web use. I defrag the machine every monday.

I've never carried bags for anyone, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night ;)

Something else is wrong here. an 2nd monitor should have little affect on the application memory.

I'd start out with the standard search and destroy for any suspicious things running on your laptop. Next I'd be suspicious of the video subsystem on the laptop. Many use shared RAM as apposed to dedicated RAM. If so, then I'd look at a memory upgrade or honestly a new laptop. After that I'd start looking at what software is running in the background and/or at startup. Use MSCONFIG.EXE to find out and disable things that aren't obviously needed. From there look at the hard drive. A super fragmented drive is going to really slow the system down especially if the drive is close to capacity. You can defrag with MS supplied tools but I'd suggest Diskkeeper. It can be installed and run automatically when the system is idle to help keep fragmentation to a minimum.

Lastly, I'd think about an uninstall and reinstall of PS and Bridge or even a rebuild of the laptop. Many times a good fresh rebuild fixes all your problems. ;-)

HTH.

Pixort is fast, reads RAW files, and doesn't create/leave any temporary/configuration files in the working directories.

The price is also right $25

I have had similar problems on a laptop (1.5g b ram, 2 monitors 75% of memory dedicated to PS).

These problems went away when nuisance background processes were killed and I stopped using other major software at the same time.

Crashes were frequent if I was impatient and tried opening,or doing file operations BEFORE the new cache for a newly opened folder was finished being written.

I like the program actually - really great for tagging files quickly for edits and then opening directly in PS.

You can PCS2 within the program...they work perfectly together..I use it for viewing all my RAW files.
And it free!

I've been using Photo Mechanic for about three years. All of the photojournalists I work with use it because it's fast, simple and easy to use.

Thank you all for sharing your experience and good advices. Seems it's time to do the following:
  • Defrag the disk
  • Add memory
  • Clean up start ups
  • Buy Photo Mechanics.
I'll give them a try soon.

Thanks again for all that helped me.

I finally found it by making the hidden folders visible in Windows XP; after that, it was easy to find

Thanks for the response, anyu. I really appreciate it.
I am having trouble locating this file in Windows for Photoshop
CS2; any suggestions?
