Some pix an amateur old geezer got with his new H5.As I said before,I took these at the 5.0 setting or they would have been sharper.

A few will have to be expanded, even though they were saved at 640.

I hope someone can tell what is causing the "wave effect" in the sky on these.I only see it on the PC in the fog pix.

Taken on a very foggy day with a lot of mist. The sky area really shows the distortion. It isn't as prominent on the 8"X10" prints that I made of the same file.

Any and all critique will be appreciated.
Thanks for your time!

Hey, nice to hear from an Oregonian. You can see my pictures of the Oregon coast too. Did you take them yesterday? I know how foggy it was, but in one case the fog helped me find a nice photo in the woods. Also check out my photo titled "Hopping the Fence", where people cross over the fence to take photos of the cliffs, often too close to the edge.

I think most of the problems that you encounter, are taking the pictures in fog. Some of the fog wasn't highly noticeable. You think that it's not there, but there is a thin layer in the air that makes the photos look washed out...and it affects the color of the water and sky. That's why I just took a walk in the woods, rather than take pictures right away in the morning.

Good pictures...keep 'em coming.

Ron,

I took a second look at the photos, and I recognize some of the spots. The fourth photo is the area where I took pictures of the surfers the first time with the H2 a few weeks back (actually I went there twice). The water is shallow here, so it's a great place for beginners and advanced surfers too. Walk down the wooden stairs there, and take some pictures at the beach on a sunny day. Zoom in on some of the action. A few of us do, clicking our digital cameras at the surfers while we stand on the shore line, and no-one seems to mind.

You took a lot of these near Depoe Bay and Devil's Punchbowl State Park, Otter Crest, Oregon but the third one looks like it's Cape Lookout State Park, which is quite a few miles north. You must have traveled a lot. But I could I could be wrong with my Cape Lookout guess (but I don't think so). If in the first photo this is Cape Lookout State Park, then the rocks out a sea must be the "kissing dinosaurs". You can vaguely see them through the fog. At least that is what we called them, as a silly name. I can't remember the real name of this rock formation, but at a certain angle it gives one an impression of very large beasts out at sea.

And don't forget, I'm still sticking to my fog story (just kidding). Actually, I'm a witness to the fact that the fog really made the photos difficult this last Saturday, until later in the afternoon. I like your last two photos showing the rocks in the fog...and the one small tree growing out of this rock.

How did I do with my guessing?

Whoops! I wish I could edit this thing, after posting. Once when I wrote the "first" photo for Cape Lookout State Park, I always meant the "third" photo. I changed my mistake once, but forgot the second time.

Having just gotten back from two weeks on the Oregon Coast, I have been organizing and picking shots to post.... but now I am hesitant.

As to the fog thing, I can surely attest to to that, though what I saw was present even later in the day and I attributed to moisture hanging in the air from the breaking surf. Kinda like it being a rarity that when visiting the Golden Gate Bridge and getting a clear day there.

We spent a week going from Astoria to Brookings (the entire Oregon Coast) and then a week coming back north. Got some great exercise for the H5.

Somebody drop their hat !! We'll head back in a heartbeat !

Digirami,
You hit them all 100%.

The "fog pix" were taken from the train that runs along the coast, north to Rockaway Beach.

However,I live in Pennsylvania and the wife and I spent 3 weeks in Oregon and Washington in September.
Loved the chowder from the Chowder Bowl in Newport Beach.

Your Oregon coast is very scenic. We really liked the Willamette Valley around Salem.

I got the camera 3 days before we left home and wasn't sure how many pix I could get on a card so I set it at 5.0MP. Now,I regret that!

We got back on Friday from two weeks on the Oregon Coast. On 10/16 we were at the Chowder Bowl in Newport, and you are right, it was great chowder. Took a couple pix inside the Chowder House, but as it was of the wife, she won't allow me to 'share' them. Great sunset from the parking lot below it, by the way...

Here is one we took at Yachats...

Great picture.

If you want to straighten out the horizon, there's software that will do that for you. On the one software that I use, it will only let me adjust it in whole one degree increments, but I'm sure that there must be better ones that someone here could recommend. I was always picky about the horizon being perfectly straight. I'm glad I didn't delete my "unperfect" photos, because later I found that I could level them...then make one crop...and you're done. :)

I like the composition in #2, though it seems a bit on the light side.

And the first foggy pics is... WOW!

R2,
Thanks!

You're right about #2 - I lightened it a little to give more definition to the dark areas and after your comment,I think I went too far.

The fog pictures were taken from an open car on a moving train. No roof on the car,a light misting rain, and the car bouncing aound - I was surprised they came out so well.

When I print these shots directly from the original (on an old Epson Stylus C60) in 8" X 10" size, they are a lot sharper than these pictures appear.
I know I need some better processing software.
