I just got the "Sigma" 50~500 f4-6.3 and noticed that the exif data records my shots wide open at 500 as being at 5.6, not 6.3. Is this because the lens is faster than marked or a quirk of the lens on a SD-9, which lists my choices as either 5.6 or 6.7 on the scale as my 2 fastest apertures?

Yes it is "normal" with the SD9 given its half-stop increments. You may also find that your focal length exif jumps (137, 161, 191, 226, 266,313, 363, 417,500).

BTW, I have an 86mm tiffen pro circularizer if you are interested in buying. I had the Bigma and sold it. I am using it as my "77mm" with a step-down. It vignettes on my 10-20.

Hello,

This is how the Bigma reports the F number at wide open, even on a Canon 20D. It does so, or the Autofocus would not work, at least on a Canon, since it sets 5.6 as the smallest aperture at which it will AF.

So I guess the Bigma does the same on a Sigma camera.

It is an incredible lens though ! A little low on contrast, but that is easily corrected in postprocessing.

Have fun with it !

The more I use it the more I love it, though I'm not accustomed to carrying that much weight on my nature walks. It does give you a more robust outing so I look forward to its helping me shed some excess baggage from my waist. I had really wanted the 80~400 OS but have not seen any Sigma mounts in my budget. It really needs a sturdy tripod, I can't kid myself anymore about hand holding a 500/850 FOV lens, so that adds to my workout and helps balance the load. Thanks.

I have an 86mm polarizer to sell if you are interested. Left over from my Bigma days. I am using it with a step-down for my 77mm lens and am (planning) getting a 77mm on EBAY. IT is a Tiffen pro 86C (for coarse thread for the 50-500) and a very good one. You can see tests of it on my lens test sit below.

While I'm certainly "In the market", I'm a bit tight on disposable income at the moment. My wife noticed the Bigma when I forgot to lock the zoom (I'd been hoping to pass it off as my old Minolta mount 400/5.6) and didn't go for the "I've had this for ages" ploy. My email is listed on my profile, let me know what you want for it and I'll let you know when the surveillance has been throttled back.
