Hi Guys!

I was just wondering if anyone knew of a good place to look for camera lenses in Ottawa ontario. I am up visiting. wanting to check out a few places. Second hand trade in place would be cool as well. :)

I presently own a nikon D50. Perference is to get an 18-200 nikon MM lens, but anything goes :)

Galaxy at Bank and the Queensway. Small store, but I like it. Found a 50mm 1.8 on the shelf there when it was on backorder everywhere. They will price match Henrys and Simons (in Montreal.)

Henrys in Kanata and Downtown. I like this chain. Bought lots of stuff there. Excellent used stock on the Internet ... shipped out of Toronto.

Never been to Ginn Photo on Bank.

Thanks all much appreciated.
I learned alot of this trip.

Such as cheapest bodies found where at gallaxy. With the best customer service dealing

Canada camera, matches anyones prices and gave the lowest price off hand without dealing on the 18-200 nikon vr lens.

So does japan matches everyone and , beats minus 15 dollars:)

So I found shopping around can save you quite a bit.! Oh yah one of the blacks say they match prices too!.

Really liked gallaxy, very knowledgeable staff.

I wasn't impressed with henry's though..i know you all say they rock, but ...eek.

I found tropps to be overly expensive even on discount lenses, except for the cap keeper they were the cheapest. :)

I deal with Ginn Photographic on Bank St. The owner Ken is in the store and the staff is very knowledgable.

It has been awhile since I last walked into Ginn Photo but man, that must be the most sparse looking photo store in Ottawa. It wasn't like that in the past.

Now they have very few items on the floor and even fewer people working behind the counter. Even Galaxy Camera has more things on display. And of course Henrys is the biggest.

I know you mean well but please do not embed my images into the forum. Thanks for respecting that.

Not many "great" camera stores in Ottawa.. Galaxy is probably the best for deals, but their current location as you've seen is sort of a "hole in the wall".. Henry's is the big chain and has the most selection in stock, but prices are quite high.. Ginn has nothing nowadays (I remember when they had both floors plus the basement full of stuff), and neither does Throop.. In fact, you're better off to go to the retail chains: Blacks and Japan Camera than to Ginn or Throop.. Headshots was interesting for a while for their medium-format stuff, but prices were not just high, they were astronomical, and now they've been taken over by Henry's..

Given the chance, Montreal is always a better destination for photographic equipment- many stores to choose from, but Simons and Royal are two good bets..

If you're out west, The Camera Store in Calgary is absolutely great- deals, stock and selection are phenomenal..

Ginn's is now Vistek, and Galaxy is building a new 5 story building with a 3,000 sq.ft. store. The hole in the wall has a lot of stock and is only short term.

opening late fall 2007...

I really like shopping at Galaxy. Even though it is a smaller store, they usually have better pricing than Henry's, and I don't get ignored completely when I go, unlike Henry's on Bank. The Henry's in Kanata has better CS. However, I do like the manager (John?) at Bank Street, he's always working to help customers, very nice to deal with.

Ginn, they always ignored me. No hello, no acknowledgement. Maybe it was just me.

Not much choice in this city unfortunately.

Galaxy is now the only locally owned camera store in Ottawa, we should be in our new building by the end of the year.

Robert Mayr, left Henry's and is now at Galaxy. I find too many staffers at Henry's are condencing. One is arrogant, a legend in his own mind.

Not just you! I get the same impression at Vistek, Ottawa, same staff from Ginn's are aloof, and seldom approach customers.

Galaxy has the prices, and a pretty good selection of dSLR.

:)
Ottawa now only has one locally owned camera store, and several Toronto based chains that are more expensive.
