Hola hola,

I took a bunch of new pictures on this very bright and sunny (but cold -- shhh Jim) day... I'd love some comments if you feel so inclined...

first three on this page (boyz n da hood, red marina, alec n):

hi amy - red marina was great... just how i imagine a fishing town to be. the swan - stunning but i wish we could see more of it's reflection in the foreground! you know the saying, "two swans are better than one"!

anyway, great shots and keep the inspiration coming. that's what motivates us newbies :-)

Amy, I want to comment, but I'm soooo sleepy. I just fell asleep at my computer responding to Kelcey about his BB shots. I'll give you some feedback in the morning. I'm outta here for now.

Dang, just didi it again. Seriouly, I fall asleep just waiting at me computer. Also, I think the 1st place indirectly. It will be a huge release donne, but how do you ask

boyz n da hood - an ok pic but birds get lost with the horizon line, better if they were higher or lower

red marina - nice composition, just use PS or the like to kill the orange on the pail cause it distracts from the composition
alec n - not an exceptional pic to me, very busy with no focal point

Gee, Long Island, that's where I have to move to.

Nice pics. Liked the red thing a lot. And the goose, detailed. I like a lot of detail on pics. My wife liked them too, she also wants to move, and she's fond of ducks and geese :)

This is so cool when you have nice stuff around.--My photo galleries: http://www.pbase.com/davidp

It's obviously you're sleepy so GO SLEEP! LOL

I'm not exactly sure what this paragraph means, maybe you can tell me in the morning when you are more awake LOL

Amy,

I really like the images shot around the water. Good composition. Want to see more.

Thanks for the comments Glenn... my comments below...

I hadn't noticed it until you pointed it out... and you're right... I'll keep that in mind when doing beach shots again.
red marina - nice composition, just use PS or the like to kill the
orange on the pail cause it distracts from the composition
Pail doesn't bug me so much... I'm going to leave it for now. I don't mind it standing out a bit because this is a fishing marina, and for me it adds to the composition.
alec n - not an exceptional pic to me, very busy with no focal point
Completely agree with ya on this one. It bugs me to look at actually, but wanted to get comments from others like yourself ;)

Thanks again!

Hi Amy,

Of the first group, I'm liking "Red Marina" for the overall feel. The opposed subjects of the boat and the building gives harmony. Boyz has a horizon that's too close to center. Perhaps more effective, if possible, would have been a closer subject - like the bird on the left - the "lead boy", showing some detail of him, while the others made up the background in silhouette.

My faovrite out of the second group is "UD Grows up", which might have been made even better by grabbing more of the relection, and also the full tail of the subject.

=Really nice stuff !

Hi David...
Thanks for the comment... Red Marina is my favorite in this batch ;)

And Long Island is a good photo-op place to live :) -- Lots of beaches, lots of parks, and only a short drive to the city (as long as you don't live all the way on the east end). I love it here... but it IS expensive ;)

It's ok. You wouldn't believe how expensive it is here :(

Unless I want to go to Manhattan, I would have a hard time finding more expensive...

We have thought of Long Island before, but can't find a job anywhere else than here :(

Hey Hedgehog...

thanks for your comments... Red Marina is my favorite of this bunch. I think it really captures this area of the fishing warf. I agree with you about Boyz, which I hadn't really noticed until Glenn (G.Spicer) also pointed it out... and you are both right. I'm going to have to be more conscious of the horizon when I'm shooting down at the beach.

UD Grows up -- I couldn't really pull out much more... he was SO close to me and they (there were actually two swans) kept trying to get closer to my mom and I (they were convinced we had some kind of food for them). There also was little reflection because of how close to the shore this was, and a lot of the water was lightly iced over (you can actually see the chunks in the water if ya look). Had he been a bit further out I could have got a nicer reflection shot.

Thanks so much for your comments!

Amy

boyz n da hood - This would be wonderful with a slight perspective change up or down to get the birds away from the horizon. I like the symmetry of one bird per poll. Lot's of potential with this one.

red marina - Wonderful atmosphere, I can hear the sea gulls. Now where are they serving the clam chowder ;-)

alec n - good technically, but somewhat jumbled and no clear subject. Different framing maybe, but the color is great.

domestic goose - Try getting to eye level and don't shadow the bird.

ud grows up - I like the shadows playing on the white wings here, just wish I could see the whole body. A beautiful shot.

wet head - Great portrait shot and I like tha angle of the beak.

Your pictures get me excited to go visit the water front :-) In fact tomorrow shall be water front for me. Thanks Amy, I loved em.

Hi Amy;

You had a very productive day of shooting! I like them all, but red marina is my favorite. As Shay said, I wish I could see all of the swan in UD (ugly duck?) grows up.

thanks for sharing.

Hi Amy,

I like the red marina shot too. Where specifically was it taken?

but it IS expensive ;)
I thought you lived close to Islip? Islip isn't that far East. :-)

(BTW, I grew up in Smithtown.)

Hi Ron,

Where I was taking this picture isn't THAT far east :) -- I'm not sure of the exact name, but it is the Marina in West Sayville, near the golf course and museum, down the end of Atlantic Avenue.

My mom went to Hauppauge HS and spent her teen years in Smithtown... and my grandmother lived there all MY life. Nice area. My brother-in-law recently tried to buy a house there, but had to settle for Hauppauge because Smithtown is just TOO expensive now :)

I was wondering if anyone else would say something about the photographer's shadow, if that's what it is :)

I love the framing of red marina, it's just perfect. Thats for sharing your great ideas and as cully said, for keeping us motivated.

Hey Shay,

Thanks for all the comments. I agree with ya 100% on the first three. I really hadn't noticed the horizon thing on Boyz until you and others pointed it out here... I have to remember to keep the horizon more in mind when shooting.

The goose... I like your suggestions for this one. I don't know why I DIDN'T get down lower to take it... though admittedly these ducks/geese/swans were SO used to people, they were getting really close to us and I was nervous they'd bite. Would be just my luck to have goosey snap at me and me back away only to fall into the icy pond LOL.

I'll anxiously wait to see your own pics down by the water...

Hey Jim,

I actually used my shadow on purpose ;)

The sun was SO bright streaming through the trees that it was creating weird bright-streaks on goosey's head. I tried to me subtle about it, but obviously didn't succeed too well -- LOL
