Dear members, while I was surfing through the internet to decide on which macro lens I should buy I came across some reviews about Sigma 150 mm macro lens. Can I use this lens with D200 and is there anybody out there who is presently using it.I would appreciate if you could help.Is Sigma a better lens than Tamron 90mm Di?

Both lenses are very sharp and will yield excellent images. The Sigma has a tripod collar, hypersonic focusing, a narrower field of view, and more working distance between the front of the lens and the subject. This last characteristic is the most advantageous for me.

The Tamron is smaller and lighter. It could be carried around in your bag virtually all the time.

The Sigma just might be the next lens I purchase. I'm trying to decide between it and the Nikon 70-200 f/2.8.

I've never tried the Sigma 150 Macro but have tried the Tamron 90 Macro. I don't think you'll find a better macro lens than the Tamron in that price range. Tried it on my D200. Unfortunately I don't have the images to show to you.

See if you can try the lenses somewhere at a store. I know a lot of people really like the Tamron.

Nikon D200
Nikon AF-S 18-70/3.5-4.5
Nikon AF-S 70-200/2.8 VR
Nikon SB-600 Speedlight Flash
Nikon MB-D200 Battery Grip

I use it with a D200 and it is a fantastic lens. I used to primarily use a 60mm macro lens, and the extra distance is really nice with dragon flies and other skittish subjects. I also included some shots I did a few weeks ago coming back from shooting Macro and all I had was this lens, so I used it for some rugby shots and I was surprised how well it did, the focus speed was excellent for a macro lens. All in all, I am very happy with this lens, it is the only lens I have that isn't Nikon but if all Sigma's are like this one maybe I should have tried them long ago.

I have recently bought the Sigma and I'm pleased with it so far. I use it on a D200 and although a bit on the heavy side I can still manage to get decent handhold shots but it is better to use a mono/tripod if light is a problem.

You could also consider the new Tokina 100mm macro (Pro version). I've read and seen great things from this lens and it is also reasonably priced.

I use the 150 on my D200, I like it so far. The IQ is good, but the AF hunts quite a bit. I don't like the material used on the body too much because it gets scratched very easily. Otherwise, it is a good buy considering the price is relatively cheaper than Nikon's.

You might want to check out here for the reviews on it;

I owned the Tamron 90mm with my 7D kit (which I sold in favor of the D200) and now I have the Sigma 150mm.

In my opinion you cannot beat the Tamron for image quality and performance. I always considered it to be my sharpest lens.

I picked up the Sigma because I wanted greater working distance. I like to take macros of insects and they are skiddish on occassion. The Sigma is also very sharp and produces nice contrasty images, however, without the focus limiter applied it does tend to search a bit.

Depends what you want it for. I have both the Sigma 150 and the 105 macros. My favourite is still the 105! I can handhold it pretty successfully if i need to, I personally can't do that with the 150. But the 150 gives more working distance for anything with wings that's likely to take off. For really close-up work the HSM is pretty 'useless' anyway as you really need to manually focus & rock gently to get the focussing correct, and in fact the HSM for this can almost be counterproductive for me at anyrate.

The small 105 is easy to stick in a bag & carry round, the 150 is as has previously been stated bigger & heavier. You really need to try lenses if you can as this is the best way to assess them for your own personal use. I'm still buying Sigma lenses but loathe the EX finish on them. Why on earth do Sigma use it???!!!

Cheers, Linda

I have had bad experience with the focusing speed of the tamron macro lenses. They are very sharp and great for the money.

However, I think that the 150mm Sigma is FANTASTIC , it is fast focusing, and tack sharp.

Dear friends thank you all for your invaluable opinions for Tamron and Sigma lenses. Inb the last couple of days I've learned that Sigma has a servicing problem in Turkey so I bought Tamron 90mm. It is a very nice lens.
