Hello proud lx2 toters,

Ive ben poking around for a potential smallish cam for doing quick and dirty street photography, candids, and social functions with. i had found that, whild the fz30 is great for taking pictures of living things in thier environment, you must do so at a distance; espeically for human beings. people notice the lens looking at them and i can't help but feel like i'm aiming a gun.

also, only going up to iso400 means anyone who is easy going enough to smile for a candid gets a flash in the eyes as a thank you.

after a couple weeks with the fuji F20, i've decided that the AF isn't as snappy as i'd like, and that the metering isn't too consistent. i'm not too concerned, as this camera is a gift for my parents anyway, and i've decided i don't want one for myself.

i'm interested in getting an lx2 for manual controls, and of course, the 16:9 sensor. but i had a look at the iso 1600 and high sensitivity mode shots, and all i can say is "barfarific"

i know i've been spoiled by the fuji sensor, which is in a class of it's own, hence my request

please send me your most barfarific picture in iso 1600 or high sens. mode. if i can PP and crank out something decent enough for an 8x10, i think will help in make my decision.

Thanks

thanks,

i've seen downloaded these shots and i can work with them, but i'm having trouble finding files at 1600 and High sensitivity. i'd really like at least the 1600 to be usable for me to justify droping another several hundred dollars this year for a hobby i have less and less time for.

Unfortunately I have agree with the last post. I am a pround owner of the LX-2 and I have to say I will not use even iso800. Not for professional use, not for candid, not for P&S.

Rubbish. Exposure is all about location, situation and illumination. There are some shots where it may be appropriate to use the higher iso settings on the camera and it is very possible to make something useable from them.

(speaking from LX1 here, a very similar camera)

The reality is that many LX1 users keep their cameras on ISO 80 almost all the time, with occasional forays up to 200. Many higher ISO shots are taken in mono. The particular technique challenge with this camera (though aided by the excellent colour rendition and shake reduction) is to get good shots in poor light. 'Good shots' means accepting the consequences of low-to medium ISO. In better light it gets easier.

If you are committed to using available light only in dark social settings, you will be struggling with any small sensor camera. I have shot (LX1) without flash indoors, ISO 100, down to 1/2 sec handheld. Yes there's subject movement, there's shake, but (say) one shot in six works pretty well. At 1/8th it's one shot in two.

Turn the flash on, of course (slow synch works well) and everything's fine. That's what it's there for.

I found this funny, in a respectful way. It is so true that while it's nice and preferable to use available light...it seems as though people forget there is a flash on these cameras.

Absolutely. And the LX2 allows you to adjust the brightness of the flash - I've taken photos inside using the flash at -2, and it's very difficult to tell that they were taken with the flash at all.

yes, i totally understand "forgetting" about my flash.

i'm glad to hear you can adjust the output on it. i guess now that i know that iso 400+ is unsusable, do i want to fork over near msrp prices for an lx2, or go for an lx1?
i really don't need the extra mp.
i'm just looking for a top notch all arounder that's smaller than my fz30.

note - LX1 is an excellent alternative, but its flash output is not user adjustable - that's only a feature on the LX2. Diffusing/filtering the flash physically does work, but may look a bit weird... there are people out there jamming a Fuji (white translucent) film canister over the raised flash unit. There is probably no need for quite that.

well, i guess that takes care of that then. i suppose now it's the waiting game to see where the prices wind up come holiday season time.

hope i don't see anything that takes my fancy before then, i've got a bunch of things i need to be thinking about besides digicams!
