You have discovered one of the fundamental differences
between Photoshop, the $500+ version and the various
Photoshop subsets. Full Photoshop allows a much more
sophisticated type of selection - a type that is essential
for serious image processing. That is why Adobe can
still license the product for so much money. They don't
include the real jewels in the subset products.
  • Go to Select -> Load Selection. Load it from the Edges channel, and make
sure the Invert box is NOT checked.
as there's no "Load Selection" off the Select menu in PSE.
Anyone have a work-around to accomplish the same thing?

Roy,

I'm well enough aware that Elements is not the full Photoshop package.
I'm also aware that I don't need and would not use a large portion
of what it includes. I don't need to work in CMYK space for example. For
my needs and current level of use I can't justify the additional cost.

It's interesting though, that one of the "jewels" Adobe used to hold
hostage to the full version was multiple levels of undo, something many
$40 packages had available for years.

But now we're way off topic aren't we? I simply asked if someone knew
how to accomplish the same effect as a "load selection" in PS Elements,
perhaps with a more cumbersome method, who knows. In that context,
I believe "no, I don't" or "no, you can't" would have been sufficient
vs telling me my choice in software wasn't "sophisticated" or "serious"
enough.

Now, I'm thinking that if I change that layer to be "loaded as selection"
to a gray scale, I can get a pretty good selection by using the magic wand
and selecting a light area, then switching to the layer with the actual image.

Not exactly the same thing, but maybe effective enough? Or maybe there's another "trick" that can be done?

I've been fighting this with PS Elements too. Did your work around work Inigo? I got tired trying to do the noise reduction trick. Maybe I'll try later tonight, but maybe you could save me the time.

I know.... it's even got a "history" palette that lets you jump to
specifci undo points. My comment was that until PSE came out,
you had to have the full photoshop for more than one undo level.
Neither PhotoDeluxe nor Photoshop LE had that feature. Very strange
in my book for a package aimed at less experienced users who would
probably benefit most from being able to "undo" their errors.

I only had time to play with it a little today. The basic idea seemed to
work, but it looks like you need to carefully select where that
black/white point is, and go easy on the level of blur applied or
the areas that border the selection boundary stand out too much and
it looks very artificial.

I'm still trying to find out exactly what kind of selection that
"load" command makes.
