Let's see your purple shots! (Pro1 flower pic)

If you leave the EV at minus you won't capture other shots accurately. I always return to zero because it sure is disappointing if you don't get the settings right. Take a photo with the setting and then change them and shoot again. If you don't use minus settings you cannot capture reds properly because the red sensors are overstimulated. The deal then is to cut down the amount of light reaching the sensors and let them combine the sensors to form the correct colours. It is sad that trial and error are required for this but that is the way this techology works at the moment.

If you shoot red roses and other bright flowers and cannot see the petals clearly then use more minus EV. Simple as that. Trial and error. - 1 is needed for those bright reds. I can't wait to shoot those dark red roses when they are blooming again.

Absolutely right. I tend to use -1/3 outside on sunny days, but not always... and generally speaking -2/3 for reds and purples. Too bad there isn't an auto EV sensor for oversaturated colors! ;)

sorry to bring this thread up again but was outside yesterday and almost mowed this weed flower down. So went to take the picture of it.

It is straight out of the Pro1, just resized and a pass of USM for the web.
This is the shade of purple I saw so no need to do any pp to it.

and of course my EC is always set to -1/3

Hello all!
Occasionally we've had discussions about why digital sensors have a
difficult time reproducing the color purple. I'm not specifically
asking to start that again (which is fine if you want to discuss
it... some may have missed those threads), but I thought it would
be interesting to see your purple shots!
Here's a super macro from my Pro1 to start it off:
This was shot in Av mode, F5.6, Tv 1/200, exp -2/3, auto WB. No
post processing other than a little sharpening. I would have liked
a bit more DOF, but the color is nice! I've been noticing it's
really key to use -1/3 or -2/3 exp to keep from overloading the red
or blue channels, and keep the purple balanced. :)
Best regards,
Mark

For reviving this thread with such a wonderful example! DOF, sharpness and color are all perfect. A winner!

Hi SueAnne!

What a beautiful shot! Perfect :) No need to apologise... thanks for sharing such a wonderful shot! I think you're absolutely right keeping the -1/3 EV. I find only dark reds and purples might need a little more, and it's almost always correct outdoors. Once in a whle I've wished I hadn't reset to 0....

Thank you Mike :)
For a supermacro and no RAW, I was pleased.

Mark,

I think that EC -1/3 is good for lighter purples and -2/3 will work with the darker colors. Will test this out when Spring '07 comes. :)

Thanks for the thumbs up.

I never have my EV at 0. Except for snow then its +1/3.

Nice capture, but a bit too contrasty and oversaturated to my taste. You might try to adjust either your PP or your in-camera settings a notch.

The first one is absolutely beautiful and I would crop it to portrait format to offset the central flower against the green background like so:

Hope you don't mind me playing around a bit. I did put your name under it and will remove the pic when this thread grows stale.

Great thread & some nice pics shown...

Purple can be tough to shoot.
RAW gives me some latitude in attempting to get it right. ;-)

Sorry for my tardiness, but I guess better late than never! :-)

Nice purples :) Thanks for sharing your lovely shots! I like Mike's idea about triming the Pro1 shot just a bit to isolate the flower and bring it out more. Beautiful colors!

Mark

I love the supermacro function... I wish holding the macro button long enough would engage it.
